GOSHEN — Thecla Catherine (Wolf) Hoopingarner, 90, died Monday at 5:30 a.m. at Greencroft Goshen Health Care.
She was born March 15, 1923, in St. Frances, Wis., to John M. and Agnes (Reinehr) Wolf. She graduated in 1941 from St. Mary’s Academy in Milwaukee, Wis.
She married Robert Van Hoopingarner Oct. 16, 1943. He died July 2, 2005.
She is survived by her daughters, Mary Hastings, South Portland, Maine, Elizabeth (Robert) Berfanger, Indianapolis, Kathryn (David) Richter, Beverly Hills, Fla., Jeannie (Ron) Bunnell, Elkhart, Jane Hoover and Karen (Steven ) Grubb Sr., both of Goshen, Suzanne (Steve) Slivka, West Chicago, Ill., and Teresa Evans, Goshen; sons, Robert J. (Deb) Hoopingarner, Ash Grove, Mo., John William Hoopingarner and Thomas (Judy) Hoopingarner, both of New Paris; siblings, Margaret Chevrier, St. Frances, Wis., Herman Wolf and Matilda Muszynski, both of South Milwaukee, Wis., and John (Joan) Wolf, East Troy, Wis.; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; husband; infant sons, Thomas Michael and James Edward Hoopingarner; grandson, Thomas Michael Hoopingarner; and siblings, Agnes Wolf, Helen Wolf, Mary Wolf, Frances Brenneman, Lawrence Wolf and Andrew Wolf.
After raising her children, Thecla worked for Selective Services as an executive secretary for 12 years. She worked as a secretary at the Goshen Police Department as a recorder for 12 years and worked part-time for 12 years at the Elkhart County Sheriffs Department with Victims Assistance until her retirement.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Goshen, the Rosary Society and was a member of the church choir for many years. She was involved with the Goshen City Theater, Nappanee Theater and Bristol Theater. She played Dolly in “Hello Dolly” and Mother Superior in “The Sound of Music.”
She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, roses and was a Notre Dame football fan.
There will be a time of visitation with the family Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen, where a Rosary service will be recited at 7 p.m.
A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Goshen. The Rev. Father Tony Steinacker of the church will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
