Genevieve ‘Jenny’ Oswald

SYRACUSE — Jenny Oswald passed away at home Tuesday after a brief illness, Jenny will be remembered as an energetic volunteer, devoted mother and wife and avid Notre Dame football fan.

She was born in Fort Wayne to David and Austia Slater.

After graduating from North Side High School, she married the love of her life John R. (Jack) Oswald in 1943 and raised seven children on the family farm.

Jack and Jenny moved to Syracuse in 1975 where they owned the Three Flags Drive-In Restaurant.

After retirement, they moved to Titusville, Fla. where they enjoyed watching every shuttle launch from Cape Canaveral.

Jenny returned to Syracuse after Jack’s death in 2001.

Jenny was a 50-year member of the Washington Women’s Club and Lincoln Homemakers of the Allen County Extension Service. She was an active member of Syracuse Calvary United Methodist Church and Ruth Circle since 1977. She chaired the craft bazaar for seven years and helped prepare and serve many community dinners at the church. She belonged to the For Fun group and was appreciated for her clever table centerpieces and baking skills. She was a regular Sunday morning greeter, arriving early and greeting all with enthusiasm and warmth. She loved boating in the summer and could be seen sitting on the top deck of the Lily Pad every Sunday morning.

She enjoyed attending the Wagon Wheel Theatre, eating and shopping with friends, Senior Mothers Club, playing cards and family football afternoons at her home.

Jenny was preceded in death by her husband and son John.

She is survived by her children, Rebecca Jewel (David), Portland, Ore., Jerry (Toby), Orlando, Fla., Marty Meyer (Aaron) and Byron (Tammy), both of Syracuse, Kenneth, Indianapolis, and Pamela Gadson (Douglas), Goshen; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Eastlund Funeral Home, Syracuse.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse, with calling one hour prior to the service. The Rev. David Jewel will officiate services.

Interment will follow at the Syracuse Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to ALS or Ruth’s Circle.

Three Goshen elementary schools — Chandler, Chamberlain and West Goshen — are providing free meals to all students during the school year as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Nearly 80 percent of students at Chandler, 89 percent of students at Chamberlain and 78 percent of students at West Goshen already qualify for free or reduced-price lunches based on their family income. How do you feel about the new lunch program?
