Goshen — Helen I. Washington, 81, passed away early Sunday evening at IU Health Goshen Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born on Feb. 26, 1932, in Cadott, Wis., to Albert and Dorothy Knitter.
On June 13, 1953, she married Jack D. Washington in Cadott. He preceded her in death June 14, 2010.
She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl (Bill Rankinen) Spero, Conneaut, Ohio, and Karen (Skip) Boyer, Goshen; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Heidi) Spero, Michelle Spero, Shane (Amy) Boyer, Brooke (Jared) Keplinger, Isaiah (Chloe) Boyer, Deborah (Rev. Ryan) Wofford, Bethany Boyer; 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Thelma Josifek, Wis., and Betty (Clifford) Evjen, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Helen and Jack moved to Goshen soon after they were married, and after working for two and a half years she became a full-time mother and homemaker.
She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW, and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed camping and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She had a special relationship with her neighbors Rodney and Tara Wortinger and their sons Noah and Parker. They considered Helen a “second grandma.”
Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Yoder-Culp Funeral, Goshen, where a 6 p.m. funeral service will be held. The Rev. Jason Kincaid of First Assembly of God, Goshen, will officiate.
A private family burial will be at Violett Cemetery.
