Katherine Metzler

WAKARUSA — Katherine Metzler, 86, of Miller’s Merry Manor, Wakarusa, died at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, at the nursing home after a long illness.

She was born Nov. 12, 1925 in Nappanee to Walter and Wilma Best Miller. On Nov. 17, 1947 she married Dale D. Metzler in Nappanee.  He preceded her in death October 12, 1993.  

Mrs. Metzler was a 1943 graduate of Nappanee High School. She lived most of her life in the Nappanee/Wakarusa area. She lived in Puerto Rico from 1957–1977. While in Puerto Rico, Katherine volunteered in orphanages and animal shelters. She was active in the Weslyan Community Church in Puerto Rico. Mrs. Metzler was a homemaker and a member of the Bible Baptist Church. She enjoyed visits with Pastor Brooks Henry and friends from the church.

Surviving is a daughter, Rebecca “Becky” (Robert) Kelly, Elkhart; a son, Bradley “Brad” (Lizette) Metzler, Wakarusa; grandchildren, Brad (Abigail) Kelly, Dryscha (Michael) Hershberger, Jordan (Patrick) Smith, Mackenzie Kelly, and Stephanie (Rusty) Ankrom, and great grandchildren, Jocelyan, Aleyna, Robert, Marisa, Juliet, Moriah, James, Wiliam, Jenavieve, Aiden, Edwin, Madison, Jaxon, Olivia, and Allyson.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Bette Bergeron and brothers, Dave and Kenneth Miller.

Friends may join the family at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Wakarusa, to go in a processional to Olive East Cemetery for graveside services. Pastor David Harper and her grandson, Pastor Brad Kelly will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be given to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
