SHIPSHEWANA — Sue Garten, 64, died at 12:59 a.m. Wednesday at Kindred Hospital, Mishawaka. She had been in declining health the past seven weeks.
She was born on Nov. 20, 1948 in Charleston, W.Va. to James Wilmer and Lucille Christine (Silcox) Cavender.
On Nov. 27, 1965 in Cleveland, Ohio, she married John Garten, who survives.
Also surviving are her three sons, John (Stacey) Garten II of Middlebury, Richard Dean (Renae) Garten of Sturgis, Mich., and Jeffery Scott Garten of Shipshewana; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Patty (Junior) Truex of Elkhart, Marie (Mike) Huddleston of Shipshewana, Evelyn Merritt and Joe Ann (Robert) Wade, both of Middlebury; and a brother, James Cavender of Mishawaka.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She was a Grade-A welder at Syndicate Systems for many years and most recently a homemaker. Sue loved to play guitar and sing, especially at her home church, First Freedom Baptist Church in LaGrange.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main St., Middlebury, where funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Revs. Wade Sturdivant and David Watson will conduct the service.
Burial will be in Rice Cemetery, Elkhart.
