---- — MIDDLEBURY — Lois Elizabeth Rhodes, 78, passed away peacefully Tuesday from her earthly home in Middlebury. Cancer had been a companion for three years.
She was born March 12, 1935, in Hershey, Pa., to Nathan and Sue (Miller) Landvater. She graduated from Eastern Mennonite High School in Harrisonburg, Va. It was there she met her husband, James. They were married Jan. 1, 1956.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Robert “Bob” (Maribeth Miller) of Middlebury; a daughter, Rhonda (John) Fehring of Churubusco; five grandchildren, Allen Rhodes of Indianapolis, Brian Rhodes of Elkhart, and James, Rachel, and Joel Fehring all of Churubusco; two great-grandchildren, Grace Elizabeth Rhodes of Elkhart and Jaxon Edward Rhodes of Indianapolis; a sister, Delores Landvater of Halifax, Pa.
Lois worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Kermit Bechtel in Goshen and as a community reporter for the Goshen News and the Elkhart Truth. She also served as a community appointee to the Goshen Hospital Board. She retired as a school secretary from Northridge High School.
Lois was active in various programs of First Mennonite Church of Middlebury, where she had been a member since 1974. She had a love for Bible verses, many of which she learned from her grandfather. She was particularly fond of Gospel music with four-part harmony.
Since retirement she and her husband participated in over 40 work projects with the Mobile Missionary Assistance Program in many of the 49 states. She thoroughly enjoyed traveling in their RV, meeting and working with people in the ministry of service.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at First Mennonite Church in Middlebury and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. prior to the 10 a.m. Memorial Service Friday, also at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her honor may be submitted to the Middlebury Food Pantry, Amigo Family Camping Center in Sturgis, MI or Merry Lea/Goshen College.
