LaMar ‘Smitty’ Helmuth

---- — NEW PARIS — LaMar “Smitty” Helmuth, 74, died after an extended illness Wednesday morning at Greencroft Goshen Health Care.

He was born Dec. 26, 1938 in Marshall County, to Crist and Wilma (Yoder) Helmuth.

On Aug. 14, 1965, he married Janet Hubartt at First Brethren Church, Goshen.

She survives along with a daughter, Tonnya (Douglas) Beck, Goshen; four grandchildren, Joshua, Joseph, Nicki and Ryne; five brothers, Homer (Janet), Phoenix, Ariz., Ed (Connie) and Merle (Nora), both of Bremen, Don (Carol) of Milford and Floyd (Rose) of Nappanee; and five sisters, Freida (Willis) Lehman of Nappanee, Erma (Melvin) Schmucker, Mary Lou (Merlin) Mullett and Laura Stutzman, all of Etna Green, and Martha (Ray) Whetstone of Shipshewana; and a sister-in-law, Martha Helmuth of Shipshewana.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Troy, who died in 1986; and a brother, Eli.

Mr. Helmuth drove truck for Burger Dairy prior to owning Midwest Marine for 20 years.

In his earlier years he played fast pitch softball and enjoyed coaching slow-pitch softball. He and Janet often vacationed in Florida where he enjoyed fishing off the coast. Locally, he enjoyed the auctions at Peddlers Village.

Friends may call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, and one hour prior to the 1 p.m. funeral service Saturday at Nappanee Missionary Church. The Rev. Harold Knight of Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church will officiate.

Burial will follow at Violett Cemetery in Goshen.
