Jay Dee Hostetler

March 3, 1937-March 29, 2013

SHIPSHEWANA — Jay Dee Hostetler, 76, of Shipshewana, died at 2:17 a.m. Friday at IU Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis after a short illness.

He was born March 3, 1937 in LaGrange County, to Truman and Florence (Mast) Hostetler.

On June 1, 1958 he married Karlyn Bobeck; she survives.

Survivors in addition to his wife are; two sons, Tom (Leslie) Hostetler and Tim Hostetler both of Shipshewana; a sister, Margaret (John) Yoder of Middlebury; two brothers, Donald (Evelyn) Hostetler of Shipshewana, Devon (Ellen) Hostetler of LaGrange; and a sister-in-law, Mary Hostetler of Mongo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tony Jay Hostetler; a sister, Marjorie Hooley and a brother, Delvon Hostetler.

Jay Dee was a 1955 graduate of Shipshewana Scott High School and was a land broker-developer since 1965, developing Valley Hills Estates and Stone Hedge East & West among other developments in LaGrange County. He was a scorekeeper at Westview basketball games for 24 years, was active in sports in the early part of his life, enjoying most activities involving sports and was an avid Hoosier fan. He was past President of the Elkhart County Homebuilders Association, served on the board of the state Homebuilders and was a former LaGrange County councilman.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at New Life Fellowship Church, 2755 Ind. 5, Topeka.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, also at New Life Fellowship Church, followed by a private family burial service at Shore Cemetery, Shipshewana. Services will be conducted by The Rev. Drew Ryall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Life Fellowship Church.

Three Goshen elementary schools — Chandler, Chamberlain and West Goshen — are providing free meals to all students during the school year as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Nearly 80 percent of students at Chandler, 89 percent of students at Chamberlain and 78 percent of students at West Goshen already qualify for free or reduced-price lunches based on their family income.
