LAGRANGE — Albert “Burl” Nelson, D.D.S., 96, of LaGrange, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at Life Care Center of LaGrange.
He was a lifetime resident of LaGrange County. He practiced Dentistry from 1940 to 1987 in LaGrange.
Burl attended Goshen College and graduated from Indiana University School of Dentistry. He was a member of the LaGrange First United Methodist Church, a life member of the LaGrange American Legion Post #215, former member of the LaGrange Rotary Club and a former LaGrange High School board member.
He was also a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving his country with the 20th United States Navy Construction Battalion (Seabees) in Okinawa.
He was born on May 16, 1917, in Shipshewana to Joseph E. and Amanda (Mishler) Nelson.
On Nov. 28, 1940, A.B. married Grace M. Murray in New York. She survives in LaGrange.
Also surviving is a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Thomas Helmkamp of LaGrange; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Craig and Linda Nelson of Fort Wayne and Roger and Leslie Nelson of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
His parents, a stepmother, Irma Eash, and three brothers, Vinton, Gary and Kay O. Nelson, preceded Burl in death.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at the LaGrange First United Methodist Church, 209 West Spring St., LaGrange. Rev. Chris Danielson will be officiating.
Burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery, LaGrange with Military Rites being conducted by the LaGrange American Legion Post #215.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Frurip-May Funeral Home, 309 W. Michigan St., LaGrange.
