Ray Leatherman

GOSHEN — Ray Leatherman, 90, died at 2:13 a.m. Tuesday at his home after a short illness.

He was born May 14, 1923, to Guy and Retta (Smith) Leatherman.

On June 9, 1950, he married Doris Juday at New Paris Church of the Brethren, where he was an active member.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Debra (Dale) Sommers of Goshen and Diana (Brett) Whitehead of New Paris; and a son-in-law, Phillip White of Richmond, Va.; seven grandchildren, Lorie (Brent) Yoder, Jennifer (Courtney) Graber, Melinda (Kevin) Park, Bryce Whitehead, Phillip (Jenny) White ll, Michael White and Matthew White; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Roxann White; his sister, Eilein Kurtz; and two brothers, Lamar Leatherman and Ralph Leatherman.

A private graveside service will take place at New Paris Cemetery. Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, Goshen, is handling arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to New Paris Church of the Brethren or Boys Farm S.C. (where his granddaughter and her family are serving as house parents).

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
