ELKHART — Bobby Gene Charles, 78, formerly of Pikeville, Ky., died at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at his residence.
He was born May 11, 1935 in Pikeville, to Garland and Jane (May) Charles.
He married Sara L. Powell April 15, 1967.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Charles of Elkhart; daughter, Bobbie Jo (Damon) Murphy, West Virginia; sons, Edward B. (Cindy) Charles, Goshen, and Keith L. (Donna) Charles, Elkhart; brother, Alston Charles of Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Delphia Adkins and Gertrude Pratt; and seven brothers, Hassell, Ed, George “Red,” Arnold “Big Baby,” Lester, Reford and Johnny Charles.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, discharged July 23, 1965. He worked as a coal miner and carpenter. He was a volunteer firefighter in Florida and an avid snook fisherman. His Christian faith was important to him.
Visitation will take place today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. service at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen. Bob Puhr, chaplain of Harbor Light Hospice, and the Rev. Damon Murphy, son-in-law of the deceased, will officiate.
Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery, Goshen.
