Herman Hershberger

Dec. 17, 1928-Nov. 30, 2009

NEW PARIS — Herman Hershberger, 80, 19195 W. Third St., died Monday at 5:25 a.m. at his home. He had been ill the past year.

He was born Dec. 17, 1928 in Elkhart, to Delbert and Elizabeth Hershberger. He moved here from South Bend more than 16 years ago.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force and worked as a journeyman at Uniroyal for more than 38 years. He was a member of New Paris Missionary Church, Goshen DAV and Millersburg American Legion. He was a foster parent for 25 years and adopted 15 children.

He married Maryellen Shipman April 19, 1947. She died Oct. 10, 1988. He married Carol Richards Aug. 14, 1994, in New Paris.

He is survived by his eight children, Danny (Jamie) Hershberger, Florida, Dwayne (Cindy) Hershberger, South Bend, Douglas (Linda) Hershberger, Osceola, Debbie Cannon, South Bend, Delton Hershberger, Three Rivers, Mich., Donald (Pam) Hershberger, South Bend, Alicia Hershberger and Richard Hershberger, both of New Paris; three stepchildren, Charles (Cindi) Myers, Bristol, Joseph Myers, Avilla, and Benjamin (Karen) Myers, Garrett; 32 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; siblings, Clarence (Juanita) Hershberger and Herbert (Grace) Hershberger and Marie Shiley, all of Deland Springs, Fla., and Paul (Betty) Hershberger, Jimtown.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dolly Hershberger.

Friends may call from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service Wednesday at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen. The Rev. David Hackney of New Paris Missionary Church and John Richards, brother-in-law of the deceased, will conduct the service.

Burial and military graveside services by Osceola American Legion Post 308 color guard will take place Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Riverview Cemetery, South Bend.

Memorial donations may be made to Care at Home Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences may be sent to yoderculpfuneralhome.com.
