GOSHEN — A body was pulled from the Elkhart River Thursday evening after Goshen police received a call about a body floating in the water.

Goshen police, fire and medics responded to a call at 7:08 p.m. Thursday about a body in the water near the Pike Street bridge, dispatchers said. The witness told police the body was in the water near the bridge.

At about 7:30 p.m., officers closed the bridge to traffic and emergency personnel gathered in the parking lot at 425 W. Pike St. The bridge was reopened a short time later.

Rescuers could be seen entering the water by boat and stopping under the southwest side of the bridge. The Elkhart County Homicide unit arrived shortly after 8 p.m. A tent was later set up at a river access point in Rogers Park.

As part of the investigation, police also taped off a footbridge that connects Rogers Park to New Street.

The name of the person found in the water was not released Thursday. The incident remains under investigation.
