COLLEGE CONNECTIONS: Carpenter excels at IU event


GOSHEN — Skyler Carpenter was back in Indiana on Saturday and the Vanderbilt freshman did what she does best: Finish first in track and field events.

The Westview graduate placed first in long jump (18-6) at the Hoosier Relays on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington. She edged Iris Campbell of Western Michigan by a quarter of an inch.

Carpenter just missed out making the finals of the 60-meter hurdles. She finished 19th in 8.99.

Men’s Swimming

 Senior Alex Burtch (Concord) won the 200 individual medley for the Louisville Cardinals in a 152-148 win over the Kentucky Wildcats at the Lancaster Aquatic Center.

Burtch also placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:40.21).

Sophomore Nathaniel Stoller (Northridge) had a record-setting day for Grand Valley State University in a 188-112 win over Indianapolis.

Stoller won the 100-meter butterfly in a pool record time of 50.46 and teamed with sophomore Milan Medo, junior Michael Griffith and junior Erik Aakesson for a win in the 200 freestyle relay in a pool record time of 1:23.50.

Women’s Basketball

Senior Courtney Simpson (NorthWood) tossed in 14 points and grabbed six rebounds for the IUSB Titans in a 60-40 win over Trinity Christian,

Senior Ashlee Ort (Wawasee) had seven points, two rebounds, four assists and five steals for the Bethel Pilots in a 68-65 Crossroads League loss to Taylor.

Redshirt freshman Akyah Taylor (Elkhart Memorial) had two rebounds and an assist for the Michigan State Spartans in a 67-62 overtime loss to the Purdue Boilermakers at the Breselin Center in East Lansing, Michigan.

Ferris State junior Sarah DeShone (Jimtown) tallied 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Bulldogs in a 73-70 loss to Saginaw Valley State.

Men’s Basketball

Saint Francis senior Ethan Hussey (Goshen) made the most of his return to Goshen with 21 points as the Cougars defeated Goshen College 93-86. He netted 16 of his points in the opening half as Saint Francis led 51-31 at intermission.

Hussey has scored 1,058 points in his career, which ranks him 24th on the all-time Saint Francis list.

Senior Elliot Smith (Northridge) drilled 3-of-4 3-pointers as he scored 11 points for the Grace Lancers in an 81-75 Crossroads League win over Huntington. Smith also had two rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Taylor junior Josh Riikonen (Elkhart Central) totaled two points, five rebounds and an assist as the Trojans defeated Bethel 85-79.

Junior Michael Kibiloski (Elkhart Memorial) scored 10 points to go with four rebounds, five assists and a steal for the IPFW Mastodons in an 80-79 win over the IUPUI Jaguars.

Junior Karvel Anderson (Elkhart Memorial) scored a game-high 22 points for the Robert Morris Colonials in a 78-68 win over Mount St. Mary’s to run their winning streak to a season-high six games. Anderson was 7-of-11 shooting (3-of-4 from 3-point range) and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. In the first half, St. Mary’s pulled to within four points (14-10) before Anderson scored eight straight points as the Colonials opened a 24-10 lead.

Women’s Track

Eastern Mennonite freshman Juni Schirch (Goshen) posted her personal best time in the 800 meters (2:34.68) in the Liberty Open in Lynchburg, Virginia. Her time was the 10th best in school history.

Women’s Swimming

The 400-meter medley relay of juniors Emily Wisolek (Northridge), Stacey Wierman (Munster), Haley Richter (Columbia City) and Mallory Przybylinski (Chesterton) won with a time of 3:58.68 as the Ball State Cardinals posted a 135-105 home win over the Evansville Aces.

Wisolek finished third in the 200 butterfly (2:05.61).

Freshman Hannah Deak (Northridge) finished third in the 100 butterfly (1:01.43) and fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:18.72) for Grand Valley State in a 177-123 win over Indianapolis.

Freshman Brittany Robinson (Wawasee) placed second in the 100 backstroke (55.80) for the Louisville Cardinals as they defeated Kentucky 168-132.
