GOSHEN — Several super Saturdays lie ahead for Goshen High School’s wrestling Redskins.

Goshen ended its dual meet season Thursday night with a 74-6 victory over the Warsaw Tigers to finish the Northern Lakes Confererence round robin with a 5-2 record.

The Redskins host their 45th invitational Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. Following are NLC championships at Wawasee on Jan. 19, the sectional Jan. 26 at Elkhart Memorial, regional at Goshen on Feb. 2 and semistate at The Coliseum in Fort Wayne on Feb. 9.

“We wrestled well for having a two-week layoff,” said GHS coach Jim Pickard. “We were sloppy in spots, but those are things we can correct. Some individuals could have performed better.”

On Redskins “Senior Night,” 12th graders Nick Cox at 113 pounds, Travis Pickard (152), Tyler Beasy (220) and Hayden Schmucker (285).

Both Pickard and Schmucker won by first-period pins, Beasy by a 17-7 decision and Cox by forfeit.

Also winning by pin for Goshen were sophomore Victor Flores (132), freshman Christian Horton (138), sophomore Jose Ledezma (145), junior Evan Smith (170), junior Ramiro Hernandez (182) and freshman Derek Paz (195).

Junior John Trenshaw won a 12-2 verdict at 160 while juniors Scotty Huff (106) and Dante Wilcher (120) both won by forfeit as Warsaw had just 12 wrestlers, counting one JV performer, make the trip to Goshen.

Josh Abbs, Travis Hanna, James Harris, Cyle Jaskolka, Antonio Mayorga and Alberto Velazquez were other senior wrestlers honored, along with their parents, before the match.

“It was good to see all of our seniors win,” said Coach Pickard. “At this point of the season, it’s more about how each individual wrestlers and the team score will take care of itself.

“Saturday starts our series of big tournaments. At sectional, then it is do or die time. I feel our lineup is fairly well set except for a couple spots where things could change.

“Horton and Paz are still learning as freshman wrestlers. They make young mistakes, but are coming along. We are in reasonable shape for this time of year with no significant injuries.”

Goshen finishes the regular season with a 19-3 mark overall.

The Redskin wrestling program hosts its annual spaghetti supper tonight in the GHS cafteria, prior to the Redskin boys basketball team hosting Warsaw.
