SPECIAL TO THE GOSHEN NEWS

DUNLAP —  It took the Goshen Lady Redskins just 39 seconds to take control of a Northern Lakes Conference game Saturday night at McCuen Gym.

Juniors Christina Gipson and Deja Felder both scored on steals early and Goshen was on its way to a 63-42 victory over the Concord Minutemen.

“It’s always nice to get an NLC win on the road,” said Redskin coach Lenny Krebs. “They are hard to come by. I was pleased with our intensity level. We played hard, if not always smart.”

Goshen dashed to a 19-9 command by the end of the first quarter. It was 31-19 at halftime and 49-25 after three periods before Concord enjoyed a 17-16 scoring edge in the last eight minutes.

Senior Aimee Swihart led GHS with 18 points while Felder netted 14 and Gipson 11.

Sophomore Kayci Troyer enjoyed one of her better outings with nine points and seven rebounds while freshman Olivia Love contributed six tallies, junior Jessica DeStefano three and sophomore Brooke Miller two.

“We maybe shot the ball too quickly at times, but did create some second-chance opportunities for ourselves,” said Krebs. “We need to be a little more patient.”

The Redskins shot 50 percent from the field and had just 10 turnovers in the game, none in the second quarter. They also had a 35-21 rebound edge with Troyer, Swihart, Felder and Gipson each grabbing seven.

“Aimee Swihart creates a lot of scoring opportunities for her teammates and Kayci Troyer took good advantage of that in this game,” said Krebs.

The Lady Redskins are now 10-3 overall and 2-1 in the NLC. They travel to Warsaw next Saturday night.

Sophomore MacKenzie Rutter had 10 points and six rebounds for Concord with sophomore Jade Iavagnilio adding nine points, senior Anna Heck and junior Jenna Makin both seven.

Gipson keyed Goshen’s quick start with eight first-period points. Felder hit a ‘3’ in the opening frame while both Swihart and Felder connected from long range in the third.

Goshen’s junior varsity improved to 9-4 with a 21-16 victory. Brooke Miller had seven points for the Skins, Brianna Yoder six, Alyssa Hershberger three, Macie Miller two, Sonia Velazquez and Sheyenne Rangel both one. Rachel Hahaj led Concord with eight.
