COLLEGE CONNECTIONS: Jesse takes to pool for Midshipmen


GOSHEN — United States Naval Academy freshman Julie Jesse (Goshen) placed seventh in the three-meter diving competition with 171.45 points as Navy defeated Loyola 196-95 and George Mason 192-96 in a season-opening swimming and diving meet in Baltimore, Maryland.

It was her first collegiate meet and her first-ever competition at the three-meter level.


The Goshen College Maple Leafs dropped a 25-19, 25-18, 25-23 Crossroads League decision to No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan. Senior middle hitter Hannah Grieser (Bethany Christian) had seven kills and two digs, sophomore middle hitter Melanie Meyer (Concord) four kills and three digs, sophomore outside hitter Jamie Stack three and three and junior middle hitter Emily Waits (Fairfield) two kills for the Maple Leafs.

Junior libero Bethany Brewer (NorthWood) recorded eight digs and an ace and sophomore outside hitter Krystle Troyer (Elkhart Memorial) 16 kills, seven digs and two aces for the Indiana University-South Bend Titans in a 25-18, 25-22, 25-19 win over Indiana University-Kokomo.

Sophomore libero Morgan Yoder (Goshen) had an ace, five setting assists and eight digs for the Manchester Spartans in a 25-13, 25-9, 25-19 loss to Hanover and an ace, 16 assists and five digs in a 25-14, 25-11, 25-17 loss to Asbury.

Senior Callie (Hartman) Patrick (Concord) recorded three blocking assists and junior Amanda Troyer (Elkhart Memorial) seven digs for the Bethel Pilots in a 25-4, 25-9, 25-12 win over Indiana University Northwest.

Freshman outside hitter Haley Bechtel (Fairfield) totaled 41 kills as the Campbellsville Tigers posted a 3-1 record in the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament at Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne.

She had nine kills in a 25-12, 25-21, 25-23 win over St. Ambrose; 10 in a 26-24, 25-18, 23-25, 21-25, 15-13 win over Indiana Tech; 11 in a 26-24, 21-25, 25-22, 30-28 loss to Madonna and 11 in a 30-28, 23-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-12 win over Ashford.


Olivet Nazarene freshman Austin Bencsics (Northridge) has assisted on two tackles for the Tigers (0-5) this season.

Men’s Golf

Senior Brady Klotz (NorthWood) carded a 75-76—151 two-day total to finish in a tie for ninth place among the individuals as the Bethel Pilots placed fourth in the team standings with a 316-304—620 in the Battle at Blackthorn at Blackthorn Golf Club near South Bend. Also for the Pilots, sophomore Brian Ulrich (Fairfield) tied for 60th (83-84—167) and freshman Jordan Younce (West Noble) was 77th (96-89—185).

“Brady Klotz has been so solid this fall and we’ve seen sparks of brilliance from (junior) Tim Langolf, Brian Ulrich, (sophomore) Drew Day and (sophomore from Triton) Griffyn Carpenter — it’s just a matter of putting it all together at the same time,” Bethel coach Chris Hess said in an interview on the school’s Web site.

Goshen freshman Alejandro Genis (Elkhart Central) finished 66th (91-81—173). Holy Cross freshman Cody Richardson (Lakeland) shared 41st (82-79—161).

Women’s Golf

Freshman Brenna Sherwood (Elkhart Memorial) tied for 73rd place with an 84-91—175 total in the Cougar Golf Classic in Chicago. In her first collegiate event, Sherwood played as an individual and finished 25th (79-85—164) in the Indiana University Kickoff in Bloomington.

Men’s Soccer

Bethel senior Eduardo Fernandez scored the tying goal off a corner kick by senior Tyler Ormsby (Concord) at 80:06 as the Pilots battled to a 1-1 tie with Taylor in Crossroads League action.

Senior Cody Troyer (Northridge) made five saves for the Pilots (6-1-3).

Senior midfielder-forward Lucas Shelly (Goshen) had five shot attempts as the Manchester Spartans dropped a 4-1 decision to Franklin in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest.

Women’s Soccer

The Bethel Pilots dropped a 3-2 overtime decision at Mt. Vernon Nazarene. Senior Kelcy Heckaman (NorthWood) played for the Pilots, sophomore Kristyn Burt (NorthWood) had two shots and freshman Mallory Conrad two keeper saves.

Marian sophomore Sharisse Yoder (Bethany Christian) has played in 10 games (nine starts) and assisted on two goals for the Marian Knights (5-4-1).

Women’s Tennis

Junior Melissa Ramer (NorthWood) accounted for two points as the Bethel Pilots posted a 7-2 Crossroads League win over Huntington. Ramer was a 7-5, 6-1 winner at No. 4 singles and teamed with senior Jill Focht (NorthWood) for an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Sophomore Taryn Johnson (NorthWood) was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 5 singles for the Pilots.

Sophomore Abbey Neff (Fairfield) posted a 2-1 record in the C Singles Flight of the Wright State Invitational.

Neff won her opening match, lost in the quarterfinals before rebounding with a win in the consolation bracket. Neff and senior Vanessa Whyte (London, England) won two matches in the  A Doubles Flight.

Senior Alli Heeter (NorthWood) improved her record to 7-0 this season with a singles win as the Manchester Spartans defeated Anderson, 5-4, in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conferences match. Manchester improves to 6-3 (4-3 HCAC). Heeter and fellow senior Alyssa Dibley (Elkhart Memorial) were recognized before the match on Senior Day.

Men’s Tennis

Marian freshman Jason Denton (Concord) was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at No. 2 singles in a 6-3 win over Trine. Denton has a 7-4 record for the Knights (10-3, 6-2 Crossroads League).

Women’s Cross Country

Grace freshman Janessa Katzer (Goshen) finished 436th out of 514 runners in the Loyola Lakefront Classic in Chicago. Her time was 23:49.

Men’s Cross Country

Marian sophomore Joseph Landeros (West Noble) placed 85th (28:04) in the Greater Louisville Cross Country Invitational. Marian finished 12th in the team standings.

Grace freshman Collin Chupp (Concord) placed 377th (28:10), freshman Corban Wyatt (NorthWood) 377 (31:04) and sophomore Jamin Parker (NorthWood) 389th (31:23) in the Loyola Lakefront Classic in Chicago.
