PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Still seeking a win

Goshen making strides, but needs to make more

GOSHEN — Goshen High School head football coach Mike Cheviron has seen improvement from his team over the first three weeks of the 2013 season.

But that improvement has not yet added up to a victory for the Redskins (0-3 overall, 0-1 NLC).

Goshen will look to change that Friday night when the Redskins travel to Nappanee to take on NorthWood (2-1, 0-1).

Goshen is coming off a 13-10 loss to Elkhart Memorial. NorthWood lost to Concord, 31-7.

“We’ve been taking some steps forward,” Cheviron said.

One area where the Redskins need to take major steps forward is in ball security. Goshen had no passes intercepted against Memorial — the second straight week that junior quarterback Derek DeMeyer has not thrown a pick.

Cheviron, in fact, has been pleased with the play of DeMeyer, who completed 14-of-30 passes for 145 yards last week.

But the Redskins had three fumbles – two of which short-circuited drives in Memorial territory.

That has to change this week for Goshen to have a chance against NorthWood, Cheviron said.

“Ball security and mental mistakes are our focus in practice this week,” Cheviron said.

That, and scoring more points: The Redskins are averaging just eight points per contest so far in 2013.

In NorthWood, the Redskins will encounter a defense that is surrendering 23.7 ppg. so far this season.

NorthWood coach Scott Hoover said his team needs to rebound on offense after struggling last week against Concord.

“It should be a good game,” Hoover said.

“Goshen has a good running back (John Trenshaw, who had 14 carries for 103 yards last week and also ran for an even 100 yards on 10 carries the previous week against Elkhart Central). And their quarterback has been playing well.”

Getting off to a good start will be key for the Panthers this week, Hoover said, as NorthWood looks to rebound from the loss to the Minutemen last week.

NorthWood holds a 10-5 edge in the overall series. The Panthers defeated the Redskins 14-7 in Goshen last season.

Kickoff at Andrews Field is set for 7:30 p.m.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
