COLLEGE CONNECTIONS: Bechtel helps her team stay unbeaten


GOSHEN — Sophomore outside hitter-defensive specialist Haley Becthel (Fairfield) had five digs for Campbellsville University in a 25-19, 25-13, 25-11 win over Rio Grande University and eight digs in a 25-11 25-22, 25-22 win over Cumberland University. The Campbellsville Tigers are 4-0.


Freshman libero Raina Troyer (Fairfield) tallied five digs for the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats in a 25-12, 25-11, 26-24 win over Mount Vernon Nazarene.

Freshman setter Riley Troyer (Fairfield) accumulated 17 assists, two aces and seven digs for the Anderson Ravens in a 17-25, 26-24, 25-22, 24-25, 15-12 loss to Michigan-Dearborn and 14 assists, an ace and six digs in a 25-13, 24,26, 15-25, 25-23, 15-11 loss to Earlham in the Earlham Invitational.

Senior middle blocker Brittany Anglemyer (Elkhart Memorial) totaled 16 kills, eight digs and two aces for the Indianapolis Greyhounds in a 25-17, 21-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-12 loss to Wingate University to open the season in the Concordia University Tourney in St. Paul, Minnesota. Anglemyer had nine kills and three digs in a 25-14, 25-21, 25-23 loss to Wayne State; two kills, seven digs and two aces in a 25-22, 25-14, 25-9 loss to Concordia-St. Paul and eight kills and a blocking assist in a 25-20, 25-22, 25-21 win over Hillsdale.

Senior libero Amanda Troyer (Elkhart Memorial) totaled 17 digs and two aces and freshman outside hitter Hanna Stump (NorthWood) three kills, three digs and two blocking assists for the Bethel Pilots in a 25-19, 25-14, 30-28 victory over the College of Coastal Georgia.

Sophomore middle hitter Sabrina Whitaker (Westview) had two kills, a dig and two blocking assists for the Grace Lancers in a 25-17, 25-13, 25-17 Crossroads League win over Spring Arbor.


Three local players were key factors for the Trine Thunder in a 19-3 win at Manchester.

Junior Anthony Yoder (Concord) made his first career start at quarterback. He completed 14 of 21 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown.

Senior placekicker Tyler Keck (Elkhart Memorial) booted field goals of 31, 25, 36 and 36 yards. The four field goals is a Trine record breaking the mark of three held by among others Trine and Concord graduate Jeremy Howard. Senior linebacker Tony Miranda (NorthWood) recorded the first interception of his career that stopped a deep drive into Trine’s territory on Manchester opening drive.

Senior defensive back Zack Corpe (Elkhart Memorial) made seven solo tackles for the Franklin Grizzlies in a 30-27 loss to Mount Union.

Women’s Cross Country

Senior Miranda Boyts (Fairfield) and junior Natalie Spahr finished 10th (24:34) and junior Erin Rockey (Westview) and sophomore Krista Woods 13th (25:27) for the Huntington Foresters in the Wabash Hokum Karem.

Freshman Mandy Campbell (Northridge) was the 25th overall finisher (24.36) for the IUPUI Jaguars in the IPFW Invitational.

Indianapolis sophomore Amy Walker (Wawasee) placed 90th (20:52) in the Queen City Invitational in Kingswood Park, Ohio.

The Bethel Pilots placed seventh out of 10 teams in the Midwest Classic in Bourbonnais, Illinois. The top runner for the Pilots was freshman Star Trost (Elkhart Memorial) in 55th place (22:02).

Men’s Cross Country

Led by a pair of local freshmen the Bethel Pilots finished sixth out of 12 teams in the Midwest Classic in Bourbonnais, Illinois. Joel Hartman (Elkhart Christian Academy) was the top finisher for the Pilots in 22nd place (27:13) while Jordan Annis (Mishawaka) was 23rd in the identical time.

“Today was a great learning experience for our freshmen and newcomers,” Bethel coach Ryan Sommers said on the school Web site.

“The temperature took its toll on some, but the majority of our guys ran smart races. Now that the freshmen have a feel for the 8k distance I expect we’ll see continued improvement.”

Saint Francis sophomore Ryan Taylor was the fourth runner for the Cougars (31:25) in a season-opening meet with IPFW and IUPUI.

Trine freshman Aaron Mast (West Noble) finished 12th (22:48) as the Thunder placed third in the team standings at the Anderson Invitational.

Women’s Soccer

Junior Kristyn Burt (NorthWood) and sophomore Jeslyn Zimmerly (Westview) were among the starters for the Bethel Pilots in a 6-2 win over Purdue Calumet in Munster.

Among the Pilot subs were freshmen Morgan Books (Concord), Taylor Bell and Laura Conrad (both Elkhart Christian Academy).

Sophomore Mallory Rondeau (Wawasee) netted a goal for the Grace Lancers in a 2-1 win over Saint Francis (Illinois). Junior Kelsey Christner (Westview) had a shot on goal for the winners.

Men’s Soccer

Sophomore midfielder Nick Wysong (Concord) recorded an assist for Pittsburgh in a 2-2 tie with Oakland. He also had a shot on goal in overtime as the Panthers fell to North Carolina State 1-0 in the team’s ACC opener.

Women’s Tennis

Senior Melissa Ramer (NorthWood) was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 4 singles and junior Taryn Johnson (NorthWood) a 6-1, 6-4 winner at No. 6 for the Bethel Pilots in a loss to Huntington. Ramer teamed with junior Stephani Sterrett for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles.

Freshman Sarah Smith (Northridge) was 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 3 singles as Taylor defeated Anderson 8-1 and a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 3 singles as Taylor topped Saint Francis 8-1.

Men’s Tennis

Freshman Chris Robbins (Northridge) posted a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles as the Taylor Trojans were 5-4 winners over Saint Francis in a Crossroads League match.
