THE GOSHEN NEWS
A solid core of 10 letterwinners is back and that could mean another good year for the Goshen High School boys soccer program.
The Redskins finished 9-4-4 (4-0-3 NLC) a year ago.
“There is a lot of experience among the returnees with eight of them seeing significant minutes last season,” coach Viratham Mounsithiraj said.
One cloud on the horizon is junior forward Isaac Huerta who netted 19 goals last season.
“He hurt his knee during basketball and had surgery last spring,” the coach said. “He may miss the entire season.”
This is Mounsithiraj’s 10th season at Goshen. He has a 92-52-23 record. Under his direction, the Redskins have won three sectional championships (2007, 2008 and 2009), one regional (2007) and one semistate (2007).
The Redskins opened the season on Saturday with a 2-1 home win over Argos. Returning senior letterwinners — midfielder Jonathan Martinez and forward-midfelder Jesus Dominguez — scored goals for the winners.
Goshen has a busy week upcoming with a home date with Westview on Tuesday, a road trip to Mishawaka Marian on Thursday (rescheduled from last Thursday) and a home match with Northridge on Saturday.
Other senior returnees are defender Geovanny Martinez, forward-midfielder Emmanuel Ortiz, defender Pablo Rangel and defender John Schrock-Shenk. Juniors are goalkeeper Tyler Born, defender JT Plavchak and midfielder-defender Kyle Ramirez Ingold,
“Ortiz and Plavchak have moved to cover Huerta’s spot at forward,” Mounsithiraj said. “We knew over the summer this was going to happen so both of them spent time working at the position. They scored some nice goals for us.
“We should have a pretty balanced team. A lot of the players have a high soccer IQ.
“Born is back at goalie where he split time last season with Hector Gallegos. He is talkative and that helps. He is still learning the position.”
Other graduation losses besides Gallegos were David Isaula, Nate Gingerich, Angel Gonzalez, Michael Gonzalez, and Hector Torres.
Also on the roster is senior midfielder Jonathan Medina. Juniors are midfielder Kevin Garcia, defender Seth Kurtz, midfielder Jose Martinez-Garcia, defender Christian Ruiz and defender Alfredo Vasquez. Sophomores are forward-midfielder Sebastian Flores-Cruz and midfielder Carlos Sevilla Canales.
“We have a good core of juniors,” the coach said. “We have players that can swing between offense and defense. Last year they played mainly on defense, but they are too skillful to be on defense all the time.”
Mounsithiraj expects the NLC to be as strong as it usually is.
“The league is always tough,” he said. “Last season we did lose one game, but finished in third place. Northridge, Warsaw, Concord and us should be strong. NorthWood is developing.”
Joe Sabo is the varsity assistant. Managers are Paulina Alvarado, Kim Diaz, Federico Flores and Yadari Rodriguez. Myron Bontreger is the JV coach assisted by Matt Bjorkland. Carlos Hernandez is the manager.
Sophomores on the JV are midfielder-defender Salvador Castillo, midfielder Adrian Hernandez, midfielder Tom Ho, midfielder Alexis Martinez, goalie Victor Moreno, defender Steve Perez, midfielder Eduardo Pizana, midfielder Alvaro Romo, defender Daniel Rosales Rosas and defender Aaron Urzua. Freshmen are midfielder Kevin Arellano, forward-midfielder Juan Castaneda, midfielder Eduardo Garcia, midfielder Mario Hernandez, midfielder Danny Isaula, defender Jose Juarez, forward Jansen Quarandillo, forward-midfielder Alejandro Rosales and goalie Mason Short.
The JV posted an 8-0 win over Argos on Saturday. Adrian Hernandez and Rodriguez had two goals apiece, Castillo, Ho, Pizana and Romo each one. Castaneda, Adrian Hernandez, Mario Hernandez and Perez were credited with assists
