Senior quarterback David Yoder has come off the bench to spark yet another University of Saint Francis football win.
The Concord High School graduate replaced starter Josh Miller with 3:51 to play in the first half and promptly guided the Cougars on a 10-play, 77-yard scoring drive. Yoder ran for the touchdown and Saint Francis never looked back in handing NAIA No. 10-ranked St. Xavier University a 45-20 loss before a crowd of 4,000 fans at Bishop D’Arcy Stadium in Fort Wayne.
A key play in the scoring drive came when Yoder connected with sophomore wide receiver Cam Smith on a 30-yard pass on a third-and-two that moved the ball to the SXU-1.
Yoder’s TD gave the Cougars a 10-7 halftime lead.
Yoder finished the game completing 15-of-23 passes for 262 yards and two TDs.
Last season, he was 119 for 209 passing for 1,478 yards and 11 TDs.
Junior safety Jeff Parker (Northridge) had made 21 tackles and assisted on nine other for the Bluffton University Beavers (1-5, 1-3 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference). Three of his tackles have been for losses.
Also on the Bluffton roster is junior backup quarterback Joel Unzicker (Northridge).
Freshman tight end DuWhan Alford (Concord) caught three passes for 19 yards as the Eastern Michigan Eagles dropped a 50-25 decision to Army.
Senior Brandon Williams (NorthWood) averaged 37.6 yards on 11 punts for the Northwestern Wildcats in a 35-6 Big Ten loss at Wisconsin. His long punt was 49 yards and he had one punt downed inside the 20-yard line. On the season, Williams is averaging 38.3 yards on 29 punts. He has had five touchbacks, nine fair catches and seven inside the 20.
Junior forward Andy Morrison (Northridge) scored on a penalty kick at the 78:14 mark to tie the score 1-1 as the NCAA DIII No. 10 DePauw Tigers went on to defeat top-ranked Ohio Wesleyan 3-1.
The win elevated the Tigers record to 11-1-1 (2-1-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference). Morrison has started all 13 games. He has scored a team-high nine goals, three assists and a team-high 21 points.
In a 2-1 win over the College of Wooster, Morrison netted his 30th career goal, putting him in the Top Ten scorers at DePauw. The goal in the Ohio Wesleyan was No. 31 which tied him for seventh place with Brian Jaworski (1984-88). J.R. Foster (1988-2001) is the all-time leader at 48 goals.
Also on the DePauw roster is senior defender Jake Hulewicz (Elkhart Central). he has appeared in two games and has taken two shots on goal.
Senior defender Jordan Burt (Concord) has started all 12 games for the Butler Bulldogs (9-3-1 overall, 3-1 in the Atlantic 10) scoring a goal and assisting on another. His goal came at the 86:55 mark in Butler’s 3-2 double overtime win over the Indiana Hoosiers.
Sophomore defender-midfielder Drew Vergonet has played in 12 games (10 starts) scoring one goal and sophomore defender Jacob Smith (NorthWood) has played in 10 games for the Manchester Squires (1-9-2 overall, 0-3-0 In the HCAC).
Sophomore libero Morgan Yoder (Goshen) has two kills, six setting assists, 10 aces and 129 digs and sophomore setter MiKayla Munn (Elkhart Central) 376 assists, five kills, 12 aces and 141 digs for the Manchester Squires (4-15 overall, 0-4 in the HCAC).
Freshman setter Riley Troyer (Fairfield) had 12 assists, an ace and a dig for the Anderson Ravens in a 25-17, 25-23, 25-19 loss to Rose-Hulman. Anderson is 6-13 overall, 1-3 in the HCAC.
Freshman outside hitter Hanna Stump (NorthWood) tallied two kills and three digs and senior libero Amanda Troyer (Elkhart Memorial) 16 digs as the Bethel Pilots (16-8) posted a 25-15, 25-19, 25-22 Crossroads League win over Indiana Wesleyan. Freshman libero Raina Troyer (Fairfield) had seven digs and an ace for Wesleyan.
Senior middle blocker Brittney Anglemyer (Elkhart Memorial) totaled 12 kills, an ace, five digs, two solo blocks and five assisted blocks for the Indianapolis Greyhounds in a 29-27, 16-25, 13-25, 26-24, 15-12 loss to McKendree. Indianapolis is 11-6 overall, 7-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Purdue sophomore outside hitter Annie Drews (Penn and Elkhart Central) had five kills a dig and four blocking assists for the Boilermakers in a 13-=25, 25-23, 29-27, 21-25, 21-19 Big Ten loss to Northwestern.
Men’s Cross Country
Purdue University junior Tyler Wynn (Goshen) finished 132nd (26:09.05) in the Notre Dame Invitational.
Bethel freshman Joel Hartman (Elkhart Christian Academy) was the 10th overall finisher (27:00) in the Bethel Invitational at St. Patrick’s Park in South Bend. Hartman’s time was :06 off his personal best.
Freshman Gaby Romo (Goshen) recorded an assist for the IPFW Mastodons in a 2-1 win over Loyola Chicago. Romo had played in 12 games, scoring two goals and assisting on one more for a team-high five points. The Mastodons are 3-9 overall, 0-1 in The Summit League.
Sophomore goalie Mallory Conrad (Elkhart Memorial) has made 135 saves in 15 starts for the Bethel Pilots.
Senior Melissa Ramer (NorthWood) recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles and junior Taryn Johnson (NorthWood) dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision at No. 6 for the Bethel Pilots in a 5-4 Crossroads League loss to Spring Arbor.
Butler University sophomore Logan McBride (Northridge) playing as a non-scoring individual tied for 76th place with an 85-83-78—246 three-day total in the Cleveland State Invitational at the Barrington Country Club in Aurora, Ohio.
