PREP VOLLEYBALL: Warriors prevail over Goshen

Nonconference matchup featured two young teams

GOSHEN — It was a young Westview Warrior team (two seniors) and a youthful Goshen Redskin squad (one) that clashed Tuesday night in a non-conference high school volleyball match at Goshen.

The Warriors played a little better and emerged with a 25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 25-14 victory.

“We still have a lot of things to work on, but the girls pulled through when they needed to,” Westview coach Heidi Brohm said. “Our fundamentals are not where they need to be, but we took advantage of some weaknesses Goshen had. Goshen is a scrappy group and you can tell they have elevated their game. I was expecting that with Kelsey taking over the program.”

Kelsey (Herschberger) West is the new Goshen coach. She played for her mom Carla Herschberger at Fairfield High School and went on to Goshen College.

“Westview had more energy than we did,” West said. “They looked like the more veteran team.

“I was disappointed. We came out to play in one game and not in the others. That is a mental thing. We had fans here tonight supporting us, but it’s not going to happen over night.”

Goshen (0-2) competes in the LaPorte Invitational on Saturday. Westview (1-1) is at Jimtown on Monday.

Among the Westview leaders was sophomore Grace Hales who had a match-high 21 kills and a team-high 19 digs.

“Grace played great,” Brohm said.

Hales notched kills on back-to-back plays that put Westview up 22-14 and 23-14 in the fourth game.

“We started playing better and getting more confidence,” she said. “After we lost the second game we knew we were better than that.”

Sophomore Maria McCoy added eight kills and senior Breann Bushong seven for the winners.

Sophomore Makai Gingerich distributed the ball to the Warrior hitters and recorded 35 assists.

“Makai gets the ball where you need it. I love having her as a setter,” Hales said.

Westview is a smaller school than Goshen and that fact was not lost on Hales.

“We like coming and playing bigger schools,” she said. “We have a lot of talent and can compete with the bigger schools.”

Senior Rachel Johns had 15 digs and an ace for the Warriors.

Sophomore outside hitter Calsey Gruzdov had six kills for the Redskins.

“Calsey played with a lot of energy,” West said.

Junior middle hitter Amy Harris chipped in with six kills and two aces.

“She played a solid game,” the coach.

Junior middle hitter Kayci Troyer had a team-high 10 kills to go with six digs.

West changed her lineup for the fourth and final game.

“Some of the girls looked tired,” she said. “ (Freshman) Carly Gingerich came in as the setter in her first varsity match.

“We are going to have to work on some team aspects. We need to trust in each other and in ourselves. We may have to work on some more physical stuff since we looked tired tonight.”

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
