NorthWood High School will soon be looking for a new head girls basketball coach.
Steve Neff — who is tied for the all-time Indiana lead in victories among active girls basketball coaches at 634 with Donna Cheatham of Scottsburg — will retire at the end of the 2013-14 season, according to a published report.
NorthWood athletic director Norm Sellers said school officials plan to name a “coach in waiting” by the end of the current school year. That coach would then work with Neff during the longtime Panther mentor’s final season and take over the program at the conclusion of the 2013-14 campaign.
Neff retired as a teacher Feb. 21 and had previously signaled his intention to retire following the upcoming season.
Neff, in 36 seasons, is 634-175 — a stellar winning percentage of .784.
