FRIDAY NIGHT REWIND: Raiders win one for the seniors

GOSHEN —  After Friday night’s thrilling, emotional 18-13 win over Angola in a Class 4A, Sectional 11 quarterfinal contest, Northridge junior running back Craig Kasten dedicated his above-and-beyond effort - Kasten was involved in two of the Raiders’ three TDs, played linebacker on defense and also on special teams — to the Raider seniors.

“This was for them,” Kasten said on a rainy, muddy field after Friday night’s game.

The past few seasons have been difficult ones for the Northridge football program, which had not won a game on the field since an Oct. 15, 2010 triple-overtime win over Elkhart Memorial.

But through it all, Kasten said this year’s crop of Raider seniors have shown the way.

“Now, we get to keep playing at least another week, and we want to keep it going for them,” Kasten said.

Familiar foe

Lakeland’s trip to Monroeville Friday night to face Heritage pitted the Lakers against an opponent the Lakers have seen before in the Class 3A sectional tournamnent.

The Lakers faced Heritage on the road in 2008, falling to the Patriots, 13-10.

This season, the Lakers lost to Heritage, 42-16. It’s the first first-round exit for Lakeland since 2009; the Lakers advanced to th e sectional semifinals each of the past two seasons.

Seeking shelter

The press box was a crowded place Friday night at Andrews Field as people scurried to seek shelter from the pounding rains. As the people milled in, the visibility diminished as the plexiglas quickly fogged up. One front row worker’s solution was to simply slide the window open, which prompted someone behind him to say, “Hey, now it’s like watching the game in HD!” Another exchange in the press box during halftime: “Good thing there is no sideline reporter here, or he would need a life jacket...”

Former conference rivals

Goshen and South Bend Adams met for the 27th time in football with the Eagles now ownging a 19-6-2 series advantage.

The Redskins and Eagles were Northern Indiana Conference partners until Goshen left the league after the 1968-69 school year. GHS teams joined the Northern Lakes Conference in 1976-77.

The teams are now 2-2 in sectional meetings. Goshen prevailed 45-6 at home in 2000 and 35-21 at School Field in 2007. Adams won, 42-30, at South Bend in 2008.

The first Goshen-Adams clash was on Sept. 19, 1941 with the Redskins winning, 7-0. Don Whitmer scored the touchdown and Chuck Keil added the extra point.

Walt Foxx, Floyd Koch, Ted Ogle, George Stealy and Larry Claybaugh were among key players for the Redskins who finished 5-2-2 under the coaching of former Notre Dame player Bud Kerr.

Goshen’s last NIC triumph over Adams occurred Oct. 30, 1959 at School Field by a 6-0 score with Bill Johnson scoring the Redskin touchdown.

Don Yoder coached GHS to an 8-1 mark that autumn with Jim Yoder, Tom Hutchinson, Jim Webb, Bud Smith, Steve McCann, Dan Berkey, Steve Ellis and Dave Guipe among other standouts.

Adams won the last NIC clash between the rivals, 27-13, on Nov. 1, 1968 at Foreman Field. Jim Whitehead and Steve Heeter tallied Redskin touchdowns.
