The NAIA Division II No. 22 ranked Bethel College Pilots defeated Taylor, 84-70, Tuesday night for the team’s 16th win of the season and a historic victory in the career of legendary coach Mike Lightfoot.
It was the 700th win in the 960th game of his coaching career. Lightfoot becomes the third-fastest coach in NAIA history to achieve 700 wins and the 18th-quickest in men’s college basketball history.
It took Lightfoot two more games to reach the 700-win plateau than former Indiana University coach Bob Knight who made it in 958 contests.
Lightfoot’s first win came on Nov. 17, 1987.
He took over the Pilot program from another coaching legend — Homer Drew. Under Lightfoot’s direction the Pilots have won 17 league championships and made 10 NAIA National Tournament appearances, including titles in 1995, 1997 and 1998. He has had 21 20-win seasons, including 10 30-win seasons and his career winning percentage of .729 is the second-highest among active NAIA Division II coaches with at least 350 victories.
