GOSHEN — Offense emerged Wednesday evening for a run-starved Goshen High School girls softball team.

The Redskins smacked out 12 hits and celebrated “Senior Night” with a 10-6 Northern Lakes Conference triumph over the NorthWood Lady Panthers at Shanklin Park.

“We were aggressive at the plate, played hard and as a team,” said GHS coach Cassi McCormack.

The victory made it a special night for Goshen senior players Emily Mullet, Lacee Mulcahey and Kaylee Shepherd and student manager Lindsey Greger. They were honored, along with their parents, prior to the contest.

Goshen does have two more games at Shanklin on Saturday as the annual Lady Redskin Classic is contested.

Goshen meets Bethany Christian and Westview battles Elkhart Christian at 9 a.m. on adjoining diamonds. Consolation and championship games follow at about 11:30.

The Lady Redskins, now 5-21 overall and finishing 2-12 in the NLC, play in a Class 4A sectional next week at Warsaw. Goshen meets Elkhart Central in the opening round.

Sophomore Brooke Miller ripped three hits while junior Taylor Caouette drove in four runs and sophomore Yadira Cabrales two to lead the GHS outbreak against NorthWood.

Junior Jessica DeStefano had a sacrifice fly in the first inning, Caouette a two-run single and Mulcahey an RBI single in the third.

Goshen scored five runs in the fourth inning after having two out and nobody on base. Both Caouette and Cabrales cracked two-run doubles and Mullet an RBI double.

Lexi VanOver was the winning GHS pitcher with solid defensive support. Shortstop Miller, center fielder Mulcahey and first baseman Caouette all made sparkling plays and catcher DeStefano threw out a would-be Panther base stealer.

“We strung some hits together and the girls just fed off each other,” said McCormack. “That’s something we haven’t been able to do often enough this year. Scoring early set the tone.

“These three senior players have been awesome to work with and have stuck with the program.”

Junior Allie Mattingly slammed a three-run double for NorthWood and sophomore Lexi Bergman had an RBI single. Freshman Arika Flickinger had a successful squeeze bunt and Bergman also had an RBI grounder.

The Panthers are now 10-11 overall and 4-9 in the conference.
