PREP BOYS GOLF: Panthers vanquish Goshen, Warsaw

NAPPANEE — A golf team wants to be peaking at the right time. And with the conference tournament kicking off the postseason push this upcoming weekend, that time has arrived.

NorthWood appears to be doing just that. Tuesday afternoon at McCormick Creek Golf Course, the Panthers bested NLC foes Goshen, 151-171; and Warsaw, 151-171.

It was the first NLC meet loss for the Tigers in four seasons.

“We played pretty good out there today,” NorthWood coach Brad Duerksen said.

“It was nice to see our top three guys in the 30s.”

Indeed, the top three spots at Tuesday night’s meet were all occupied by Panthers: NorthWood No. 2 Payton Grubbs earned medalist honors with a 36; No. 1 Dylan Gessinger had a 38; and No. 3 Logan Kauffman carded a 37.

Grubbs said his round could have even been a few stokes better.

“I had a couple of holes where I followed birdies with bogeys,” Grubbs said.

Still, Grubbs was pleased with his round, and feels his game is finally starting to come together.

“Dylan has been pretty consistent,” Grubbs said.

“The rest of us need to be, too.”

Goshen coach Brent Randall, despite seeing his young team drop to 4-12 overall on the season (0-5 NLC), saw some positives.

One of those was the play of sophomore No. 3 Michael Chupp, who shot a 39.

“We’ve been waiting to see that from Michael all season,” Randall said. “We made some adjustments to his swing this week, and it paid off for him.”

Randall, as his team gets ready to host the NLC Tournament at Maplecrest Country Club this Saturday, said the Redskins have some things to work on.

“We’re starting to get three pretty consistent scores,” Randall said.

“But we need to see that from our No. 4 and No. 5 guys also.”

Goshen travels to South Shore in Syracuse on Thursday to take on Northridge and Wawasee. NorthWood travels to Bent Oak in Elkhart on Thursday to take on Concord.

Summary

Goshen (171) — Alex Hartsough 41; Joel Moyer 43; Michael Chupp 39; Quinn Albin 48; Jake Pries 62.

NorthWood (151) — Dylan Gessinger 38; Payton Grubbs 36; Logan Kauffman 37; Ryan Thompson 40; Brayden Glaser 40.

Warsaw — Jon Schram 45; Evan Cottice 41; Tim Ahlersmeyer 40; Jonny Hollar 39; Will Petro 41.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
