PREP TRACK AND FIELD: Falcons take crowns

Both Fairfield squads excel in NECC meet Friday night in Busco

CHURUBUSCO — It was a Fairfield sweep Friday night in NECC boys and girls high school track and field.

The boys meet might have been a little closer than some expected as it came down to the final event — the 4 x 400-meter relay. Westview had a three-point lead heading into the 4 x 400 so Fairfield needed to finish two places ahead of the Warriors to makeup the deficit and win the meet

There was no dramatic finish, however, as Westview was disqualified when a runner cut in too early.

“It’s not exactly the way you want to win,” Fairfield coach Bob Miller said. “Westview had a great night. They are very young. So we are very happy to come away with a win.”

Westview coach Paul Baker said, “I’m very pleased. We knew we would have to be hitting on all cylinders to beat Fairfield.”

Fairfield totaled 121 points and Westview finished at 114. Lakeland was third at 105, followed by Churubusco 92, West Noble 66, Prairie Heights 43, Angola 26, Central Noble 22 1/2, Eastside 19 1/2 and Fremont 15.

Fairfield was in a battle with Angola for the girls crown. The Falcons ended up with 116 1/2 points while Angola had 107 1/2.

“My stomach was turning all day long,” Fairfield coach Darin Holsopple said.

“After the high jump was had a 21-point deficit. We just kept chipping away. We were always climbing and we ended up on top.”

Westview took third with 98 points, followed by West Noble 92, Fremont 74, Churubusco 61, Central Noble 34, Lakeland 28 and Prairie Heights 11.

Fairfield senior Brett Baumgartner had a great night, winning the 100 (11.39) and 200 (22.46) as well as anchoring the first-place 4 x 100 and 4 x 300 relays.

“Brett had a great night,” Miller said. “Let’s hope he keeps running for a few more weeks.”

Fairfield’s other individual win came from Cameron Kitson in the 110 high hurdles (15.20).

The Fairfield girls got individual wins from Sierra Smith in shot put (37-0 3/4) and Sophie Brown in pole vault (12-6). Brown’s mark was a meet record.

Two decades after NASCAR started running at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the crowds have thinned considerably. It's probably no reflection on the sport's massive following, which stretches from coast to coast, but it surely doesn't NASCAR's image help when the cameras pan across all of those empty seats.
