PREP BASEBALL: Redskins split Saturday twinbill

GOSHEN — When Chicago Cub great Ernie Banks said, “Let’s play two!” he probably didn’t have Saturday’s Goshen High School baseball schedule in mind.

Due to inclement weather that has caused a rash of cancellations this spring, a makeup game against Fairfield was scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Redskins already had a 10 a.m. contest against Westview on their plate.

The Redskins have been struggling a bit this week — in need of some kind of spark to turn things around.

Goshen did just that in against Westview, rallying from a 4-0 deficit to beat the Warriors, 5-4.

The Redskins gave up two runs in each of the first two innings, then got a run in the bottom of the second before tying it in the bottom of the fourth. Austin Henke belted a bases-loaded triple in the 3rd inning to tie the game at 4 and Kyle Taylor hit a sixth inning single and later scored the win run for the Redskins.

Henke said he was glad to provide an offensive spark for his team. Henke had been struggling at the plate himself as of late,

“It was a fastball on a 3-1 pitch, so I was in a good spot in the count,” Henke said.

Derek DeMeyer started on the mound and went 51/3 innings striking out six. Jake Jesse pitched the final 12/3 innings in relief and got the win allowing no runs on one hit.

Goshen coach Hal Farmwald was pleased to see his struggling team stay together and find a way to win.

“This was a big win for us,” Farmwald said. “We’ve really been struggling lately.”

Deric Haynes and Tyler Slagel had the big bats for the Redskins as they had three and two hits each respectively.

Goshen later lost the second game of its split doubleheader Saturday afternoon to Fairfield, 9-2 at Fairfield. Jake Jesse started on the mound with relief from Trevor Weldy.

Sylas Buller had two hits for the Redskins and Deric Haynes added a double.

The Redskins now stand at 6-11 on the season and will host Elkhart Memorial in an NLC matchup on Monday at Phend Field.
