PREP BASEBALL: Redskins struggle against Tigers

GOSHEN — The first inning set the tone Friday for Goshen’s Redskins and it wasn’t a pleasant one.

Warsaw’s Tigers scored five times in the top of the first inning and rolled to an 11-0 Northern Lakes Conference triumph at Phend Field.

Two walks started the game for Warsaw with seniors Shay Hepler and Jared Lemler, juniors Caleb Moneyheffer and Tanner Balazs all slapping run-scoring hits and a fifth run tallied on a wild pitch.

Senior Austin Henke walked and junior Deric Haynes singled to start Goshen’s half of the first, but a pop foul to the catcher and a double play ended the inning.

“This all starts with throwing the ball across the plate,” said GHS coach Hal Farmwald. “When you walk the first two of an inning, most of the time both are going to score.

“We need to find pitchers who are going to consistently throw strikes. When you get down 5-0 right away, things aren’t often going to work out. It limits what you can do with an offensive approach.

“We work a lot in practice on situations and now we need to carry it over into games. The best thing about this is we are right back on the field Saturday for two games.”

The Redskins, 5-10 overall and 3-6 in the NLC, host Westview at 10 a.m. today and then travel to Fairfield for a 2 p.m. makeup contest.

Warsaw added three runs in the second inning and three more in the third for the 11-0 count. Senior right hander Tyler Slagel of the Redskins then shut out the Tigers over the last two frames.

Moneyheffer wound up with four RBI and Lemler three for Coach Mike Hepler’s Tigers, now 7-6 overall and 6-3 in the league.

One of Hepler’s assistant coaches is 1994 Northridge grad Justin Love, a football, basketball and baseball star for the Raiders.

Haynes had half of Goshen’s hits, also slapping an infield single in the fifth inning.

Both Slagel and senior Sylas Buller singled in the fourth when the Redskins left the bases loaded.
