ELKHART COUNTY FAIR: Down to the wire

3-on-3 hoops tournament set to end tonight

GOSHEN — Semifinals in one age division and quarterfinals in another were determined Wednesday night in the annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair.

The tournament concludes this evening with championship games in five age groups. After the final game a slam dunk contest and a 3-point shooting contest are slated. There is no charge for the slam dunk and a $5 charge for the 3-point contest.

Action on Wednesday began in the male age 16-18 group.

Team J. Line and Team K. Hochstetler will meet in one semifinal tonight around 8:35. Members of the Team J. Line are Joseph Line, Clay Bontrager, Nathan Azzarito and Parker Zent. Playing for Team K. Hochstetler are Kurtis Hochstetler, Caleb Kiser, Cameron Maxwell and Dimitri Gieger.

The other semifinal, also around 8:35 matches Team Danner and Team J. Rhodes. Team Danner is made up of Austin Danner. Ghaneah Wayker, Filip Serwataka and Ramon Pressler. Playing for Team J. Rhodes are Jaylin Rhodes, Treyton Harris, Darrius Baker and Jerrell Pointdexter.

The other division playing on Wednesday was male age 19-30.

The division will begin play tonight at 6:30 with Team Randolph facing Team Gingerich in one contest. Team Randolph is made up of Micah Randolph, Darby Showalter, Tony Troeger and Tyler Runkle. Comprising Team Gingerich were Robby Gingerich, Andy Curry, Derek Vogelzang and Miles Kritzman.

The other quarterfinal at 6:30 matches Team Deckert and Team T. Chupp. Playing for Team Deckert are Brandon Deckert, Caleb Stanton, Brandon Maxwell and Christian Attlesey. Making up Team T. Chupp were Tim Chupp, Rodney Lee, LaVon Parker and Danny Parker.

The other quarterfinals begins at 6:55 with Team D. Chupp clashing with Team Santistevan while Team Stichter squares off with Team Hussey.

Playing for Team D. Chupp are Daniel Chupp, Michael Koronkiewicz, Micah Horner and Caleb Laidig. Team Santistevan is made up of Danny Santistevan, Blake Davis, Mike Ramirez and Joe Godfread. Team Stichter had Riley Stichter, Jake Frazier, Steven Heatherley and Greg Miller. Playing for Team Hussey are Ethan Hussey, Dan Palombizio, Loran Bryant and Cam Snyder.

Team Stichter had an unusual start to its first game. Only two players — Riley Stichter and Steven Heatherley — were there to start the game, forcing them to play two-on-three. Jake Frazier was caught in traffic trying to get on the fairgrounds. He finally arrived about midway through the game that Team Stitcher went on to win 18-15 over Team Stutzman.

Wednesday night’s games were officiated by Steve Arko, Kim Curry, Dave Negron and Rod Morgan.
