CLASS 2A BOYS BASKETBALL SECTIONAL: Warriors vanquish CN, on to finals

EMMA — Westview took awhile to get its game in gear Friday night in a Class 2A Westview Sectional game against Central Noble.

But when the Warriors were finally able to shake off some early cobwebs, the Warriors bested the Cougars, 55-35 to move on to tonight’s title tilt against LaVille, a 56-35 over Prairie Heights later in the evening.

For Westview head coach Rob Yoder, the game was an object lesson for a point he stresses constantly to his team.

“You’ve got to play four quarters,” Yoder said. “We got off to a slow start tonight, and you can partly credit Central Noble’s defense for that.”

Indeed, both teams muddled their way through a sloppy opening stanza that saw Westview lead 9-8 at the first stop.

The Warriors found their offensive stride midway through the quarter however, and with just over five minutes to play and a razor-thin 11-10 advantage, they closed the half with an 18-1 run to lead 29-11 at the halftime break.

Westview led by as many as 24 in the second half.

Yoder said the difference came down to hitting shots.

“We had some good shots early that didn’t fall,” Yoder said. “But I liked our determination, especially from our seniors.”

Central Noble coach Brett Burrough was prod of his team’s early play.

“We wanted to rebound well early, and we did that,” Burrough said.

But the Cougars shot just 3-for-21 in the opening 16 minutes.

“Our defense was playing well, but our offense didn’t pick it up,”

Kyle Miller led Westview (20-3) with 14 points. Nic Raber had 11 and Miller’s younger brother, freshman Kolton Miller, added seven.

Elijah Andrews led Central Noble with nine points.

Warrior sophomore center Chandler Aspy, after pouring in 35 points Tuesday night in the sectional quarterfinals against Bremen, watched much of this one from the bench with foul trouble. Aspy spent much of the second quarter sitting after picking up his third foul early in the frame.

Aspy picked up his fourth with 5:54 left in the third and it was back to the bench,

But the Warrior standout said his teammates stepped up in his stead.

“That’s the kind of team we have,” Aspy said. “The guys picked me up.”

And now Aspy and his teammates have a chance to cut down the nets again on their home floor with a win tonight.

Westview and LaVille will face off at 7 p.m.

“This is what we play for,” Aspy said. “The opportunity to win a title.”

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
