GOSHEN — Cristian Barron of Goshen won the 300-meter hurdles Thursday night in the IHSAA boys track and field sectional at Goshen and he was quick to credit GHS assistant coach Carl Weaver for the success.

“He (Weaver) has been working with the hurdlers. He has a lot of great advice and so much experience,” Barron said. “I’m really kind of speechless. I have to thank my teammates and God. I would not have won without my teammates pushing me and without the ability from God.

“I have been running the 300 hurdles since my freshman season. It’s a love-hate relationship. The 300s are a tough race to run.”

Barron finished in a time of 40.33.

“A couple of the other runners kind of stumbled and that gave Cristian an opening,” Goshen coach Brock Maust said. “He is not there yet in running the event, but he is a sectional champion.”

The team title as expected went to the mighty Warsaw Tigers as they amassed 135 points, Fairfield was second at 81, followed by Northridge 75, Elkhart Memorial 66 1/2, Elkhart Central 59, Goshen 54 1/2, Wawasee 42, Jimtown 41, Concord 30, NorthWood 22 and Elkhart Christian Academy 18,

“Warsaw is so strong and so deep in so many events,” Fairfield coach Bob Miller said. “This is the third or fourth time we have finished second in the sectional. This is great for our kids. We tell them to keep their focus and try to do better than they did last week.”

The top four finishers in each event advance to the regional next Thursday at Kokomo.

Senior Kyle Ostrander of Fairfield won discus (154-0).

“Cameron Kitson had a great night for us in the hurdles, pole vault and the 4 x 100 relay,” Miller said. “Dillon Lockwood had an awesome night for us. Our 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays had their best times of the season.”

Josh Rheinheimer won pole vault (14-0) and teammate Devin Puckett was second (13-4) to lead Northridge.

“I would never say points in pole vault are a given, but we usually count on them” Northridge coach Josh Fletcher said. “Michael Fickert placing fourth in shot put was huge. This is his first year in the sport. James Bradberry ran well in the 1,600 and Michael Presnell had a good night in the hurdles. So did Hunter Johnson in the 800.”

Clayton Cook of Wawasee won the 110 high hurdles (15.08) and teammate JJ Gilmer won the high jump (6-4).

Reid Zimmerman of Goshen was the runner-up in the 800 (1:56.03) to Robert Murphy of Warsaw (1:55.27).

Zimmerman pulled out of the 1,600 in order to focus on the 800 and the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relays.

“I talked it over with some people and felt that was the best way to go,” Zimmerman said.

“My goal was to finish second, but the idea was to stay with Murphy as long as I could. The last 50 meters were about as bad as I have ever had lactic acid. It was a good finish, but not a lot of fun.

“I went to regional on the 4 x 800 last season so it is nice to go as an individual.”

Goshen got a second in the 4 x 800 relay (8:04.16) from the foursome of Ricardo Castillo, Alfonso Torres, Zimmerman and Abe Medellin. Also going to regional is Nicholas Gerber (third in discus at 136-1).

“The 4 x 800 relay had a good showing,” Maust said. “Gerber had a personal best in discus by 12 feet. He has decided he belongs in the ring.

“We had one of the fastest 4 x 100 (fifth in 43.92) since I have been at Goshen, but it was still not fastest enough to get out of this sectional.”

Goshen’s 4-by-400 relay team of Andrew Pillow, David Isaula, Castillo and Barron also quialified, finishing fourth in 3:27.60.
