COLLEGE CONNECTIONS: NorthWood grad Thompson fifth in super regional

University of Indianapolis junior Amy Thompson placed fifth among the individuals at the NCAA Division II East Super Regional at the Joliet Country Club near Joliet, Illinois.

The NorthWood High School graduate carded a 79-79-76—234 three-day total.

Thompson finished just behind two teammates. Junior Jenny Konop had 75-77-80—232 and sophomore Regan Pittard 76-80-76—232.

Indianapolis has won back-to-back Regional championships.

Next up for the Greyhounds is the NCAA DII National Championship May 15-18 at Daytona Beach, Florida.

Thompson tied for seventh place (79-78—157) in the recent Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament at Annbriar Golf Club near Waterloo, Ill.

Over 23 rounds this season, Thompson is averaging 79.9 strokes per 18 holes, just slightly above her career average of 79.5 at Indianapolis.

Softball

• Bethel College sophomore Natalie Newell (Goshen) has been named the Crossroads League Pitcher of the Year for the second consecutive season. She was the league leader with a 1.02 earned run average in 137 innings and 252 strikeouts. She averaged 16.55 strikeouts per game. Newell was the Crossroads League Pitcher of the Week three times and the NCCAA Student Athlete of the Week one.

• Anderson University sophomore Samantha Steele (Northridge) is batting .310 (22-of-71) in 24 games for the Ravens who have a 28-16 overall record, 12-4 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. She has driven in three runs, scored 20 runs and stolen 10 bases.

• Saint Mary’s College junior Callie Selner (Elkhart Memorial) has been named to the all-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association first team for the second straight year. Offensively, she was fifth in league batting .480 over the 16-game conference season and tied for third in RBI with 25. As a pitcher, she led the MIAA with 64 innings pitched in league games, limiting hitters to a .248 average.

Women’s Tennis

• Four former area prep players competed for the Bethel Pilots in a 9-0 loss to Olivet Nazarene in the NCCAA North Central Regional. Junior Melissa Ramer (NorthWood) dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 4 singles, junior Morgan McFarren (Westview) a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 5 singles and sophomore Taryn Johnson a 6-0 6-1 decision at No. 6 singles. Senior Jill Focht (NorthWood) teamed with Ramer for an 8-4 loss at No. 3 doubles after leading halfway through the match.
