PREP BASEBALL: Redskins win their second in a row

DUNLAP — At the beginning of this week, the Goshen High  School baseball team set a goal: To be at .500 by the end of the week.

The Redskins are within one game of that objective after a 4-2 win over Concord on the road Thursday afternoon.

It’s the second consecutive NLC win of the week for Goshen (4-5, 2-3). The Redskins scored a thrilling come-from-behind 7-6 victory over Plymouth on Monday.

Thursday night at Concord, the Redskins got it done with a complete effort — something coach Hal Farmwald was especially pleased to see.

“We got great pitching, timely hitting and good defense, and it added up to a quality win against a good team,” Farmwalk said.

The great pitching came from Jorge Pizana, who scattered just three hits over seven innings to earn the complete game victory. Pizana struck out just one, but kept Concord hitters off balance all night.

Pizana said his off-speed pitches were his most effective Thursday night.

An explosive curveball helped too.

“I was able to get ahead of the hitters,” Pizana said

Goshen scored three runs in the first to set the tone for the contest, taking advantage of a Concord error in the process.

Travis Pickard had an RBI single in the frame.

Concord dropped to 4-2 (2-2).

Concord coach Jim Tredway gave credit to the Redskins.

“Their pitcher had us off-balance,” Tredway said. “When we hit the ball, it was at people. We had a bad approach at the plate tonight ... We were trying to  hit his pitch.”

The Redskins return to action tonight at home against Wawasee.

Concord takes on Warsaw, also tonight.
