When seeking a college where she could pursue both of her areas of interest Jackie Greenawalt’s choices were somewhat limited.
Due to that the Concord High School senior signed a national letter of intent recently to continue her academic and soccer careers at St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer.
“I liked the academics at St. Joseph’s. There are a variety of things to study,” Greenawalt said. “I want to study physical therapy with the possibility of going into athletic training. I’m also interested in art. I like to draw. So it was nice to find a place where I could study both. If I don’t major in both I want to at least minor in art.”
She also felt comfortable at St. Joseph’s.
I really liked the atmosphere and I meshed well with the team,” she said.
Another plus was her Concord teammate Sarah Emerson also going to St. Joseph’s.
“It’s really nice going there and already knowing someone,” she said.
Trine, Anderson, Manchester and Indiana Tech were other schools she looked at.
Greenawalt was a key component of the Concord girls soccer team last fall as she netted the lone goal in the team’s 1-0 victory over No. 15 Northridge in the championship of the Goshen sectional.
She received the team’s offensive award for the 2012 season,
“We really worked hard on conditioning at Concord,’ she said. “That will help in college. I’m going in knowing you have to play 100 percent all the time and you can’t if you are not in top shape.”
She played forward at Concord and is expecting to play the same position at St. Joseph’s. She also knows there is still work to be done on her game,
“I really need to get the technical parts of my game perfect,” Greenawalt said. “I think I know what to do in any situation in order to reach my full potential.”
Between athletic and academic scholarships she has about $18,000 of the $35,000 annual tuition covered.
She likes the fact St. Joseph’s is relatively close to home.
“It’s away from home but not too far,” Greenawalt said. “It about two and a half hours away so I can come home on weekends.”
Jackie is the daughter of Mark and Tomi Greenawalt.
