SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT: Back home again

Goshen grad Everingham returns with AZ hoop team

GOSHEN —  It’s been a long time since Ron Everingham Jr. was able to come home to Goshen.

Five years, as a matter of fact.

But the 1989 Goshen High School graduate was finally able to make it back to town this week, and he brought a few friends along.

After spending some time working with Apache Youth Ministries in Arizona, Everingham is now an assistant boys basketball coach at Blue Ridge High School in Arizona.

The school is a public high school just outside the sprawling Apache reservation in central Arizona with an enrollment of 875.

This week, the Blue Ridge varsity boys team is spending some time in Indiana, getting a little taste of what basketball is all about here in the Hoosier state. Everingham and the team arrived in the area on Wednesday and will be here through this upcoming Wednesday.

One of the main items on the agenda for the trip was a two-day tournament hosted by Bethel College.

A total of 48 teams competed in the Bethel College Shootout, which was held over Friday and Saturday across three sites in Mishawaka.

The Yellow Jackets also have been scrimmaging several other local teams. On Friday, they were at the Goshen High School gym bright and early to scrimmage Goshen coach Brian Bechtel’s team, Thursday night, they were in Auburn to scrimmage a DeKalb squad  coached by Everingham’s brother, Jon.

The trip — the first out-of-state excursion by the Blue Ridge team since Everingham has been an assistant there — has been a good experience for the boys, and not just on the basketball side of things, Everingham said.

“It’s been a chance for the boys to see a different part of the country, make some new friends,” Everingham said.

But of course, the basketball has been a big part of the trip, Everingham added.

“I wanted the boys to see some of the big, historic gyms in Indiana,” Everingham said.

And before they go home, the Yellow Jacket players will have a chance to see another big part of Indiana high school basketball history: They will visit Hoosier Gym in Knightstown, site of filming for the famous 1986 film, “Hoosiers.”
