THE GOSHEN NEWS
On a day when the weather conditions would have even made former Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Ernie Banks question the wisdom of playing two, the Goshen High School girls softball team took the field on Saturday.
The Redskins battled cold temperatures, gusting winds and the occasional flakes of snow in a twin bill with the visiting Sough Bend Adams Eagles at Shanklin Park.
Adams took both game of the doubleheader winning the opener 10-4 and the nightcap 19-5.
“Adams has a bunch of hitters,” Goshen coach Cassi McCormack said.
Goshen was slated to play in the Lady Eagle Invitational today at LaSalle Park in South Bend. The field was not playable so the Eagles came to Goshen instead.
The Eagles pounded out 11 hits in the first game and 21 in the second. Goshen had 10 and eight.
“We showed up with our bats, but no where else,” the coach said. “Our defense was not good and that is usually one of our strengths. There were a lot of balls that fell in today that on a normal day would have been caught.
“I know it was cold out here, but Adams was cold too. You have to block out the weather. You may not want to be out here but you have to be so you might as well make the most of it and get your money’s worth.”
Goshen (3-7) visits Northridge on Monday.
“The girls are tired,” McCormack said. “This was our fourth or fifth game and all except one have been played in poor weather conditions.”
Adams got off to a fast start in the first game when Brittany Martens tripled and scored one batter later on a single by Hannah McDonald. The Eagles added one more run when Sydney Holland singled home McDonald.
Adams added two more runs in he third and a solo run in the fourth before scoring two more in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Martens was a problem for the Redskins all day as she reached base nine times in her 10 trips to the plate on six hits, a walk, a fielder’s choice and an error. She scored seven runs and drove in three.
The Redskins scored twice in the sixth on a run-scoring single by junior Jessica DeStefano and an RBI double by sophomore Yadira Cabrales.
Senior Lacee Mulcahey, who signed earlier in the week to play next year at the University of Saint Francis, smacked a pair of doubles for Goshen.
Adams also took an early lead in the second game with five runs in the first inning, three in the second and seven in the third.
Goshen tried to keep pace with a run in the first and three in the second. Junior Taylor Caouette had a run-scoring double in the first while senior Emily Mullet and sophomore Brooke Miller both slapped run-scoring singles.
Miller had two singles in the opener and two more in the second.
“We have been waiting for her to hit the ball like since last season,” McCormack said. “A lot of it is confidence, but we would not put her in the lead off spot in the order if we didn’t have confidence in her.”
One of Miller’s hits was a rocket shot back up the middle that hit the Adams pitcher Hannah VanHeesbeke in the leg. She went to the ground and was down for several minutes. She recovered and returned to the circle to complete the game. She also pitched two innings of the nightcap and recorded the final out of the game when she moved to center and tracked down a long bomb by Caouette.
“Brooke always hits the ball hard,” McCormack said. “She is a good line drive hitter.”
Miller and Cabrales switched positions with Miller moving to short and Cabrales to second.
“Brooke is a natural at short. She was our defensive player of the year last season at second,” the coach said. “Yadira actually turns the double play at second a little faster.”
