PREP BOYS BASKETBALL CLASS 1A SECTIONAL PREVIEW: Canterbury looks to be best of 1A tourney field

Elkhart Christian Academy, Bethany Christian local teams in Hamilton Sectional

HAMILTON — Fort Wayne Canterbury is defending sectional champion and the Cavaliers went on to win the Triton regional a year ago.

This 1A high school boys basketball sectional is an eight-team field with this year’s tourney taking place at Hamilton.

Action begins on Tuesday with the Howe School Wildcats (1-17) meeting the Lakewood Park Christian Panthers of Auburn (15-5) at 6 p.m., followed by the Elkhart Christian Academy Eagles (13-7) and host Marines (5-15) around 7:30.

On Wednesday, the Cavaliers (12-8) face the Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian Braves (7-15) at 6 while the Bethany Christian Bruins (3-17) of Goshen square off with the Lakeland Christian Cougars of Winona Lake (7-14) around 7:30.

Semifinals are on Friday with Tuesday’s winners playing at 6, followed by Wednesday’s winners around 7:30.

The championship is Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The champion at Hamilton moves on to the Triton regional, meeting the winner from Culver on Saturday, March 9 around 12:30 p.m.

The first game at 10:30 a.m. matches winners from Kouts and West Central. The championship is at 8:30 p.m.

Howe School dropped an 87-29 decision at Lakewood Park on Jan. 24.

The top player for the Wildcats is 6-7 senior Arnas Zabarauskas. Others are 6-2 senior Davie Holliday, 5-11 senior Wes Mykrantz, 5-11 senior David Sherman-Hay, 5-9 senior Hou Qi, 5-10 senior Denim Matchett and 6-1 sophomore Simon Williams.

Lakewood Park is led by 6-3 senior Noah Cole, 6-2 senior Zarek Finley, 5-8 senior Joel Haines, 5-11 senior Kenneth Koontz, 5-9 senior Chris Maron, 5-11 senior Collin Price, 6-7 senior Calvin Prinsen and 5-11 junior Chris Silveus.

The ECA Eagles posted an 83-51 win at Hamilton back on Nov. 30.

Six-two junior Ryan Kupferschmid is the top scorer for the Eagles. Other leaders are 6-3 senior Caleb Stayton, 6-3 senior Tyler VanArsdale, 6-1 senior Jack Walters, 5-11 junior Kenny Bearss and 6-2 junior Tanner Watson.

Hamilton is led by 6-1 senior Brett Converset, 6-0 senior Carston Dick, 6-2 junior Hunter Schiffli, 5-8 junior Daine Jefferson, 5-10 junior Aaron Kelly, 6-4 junior Addison Etgrleo and 6-3 junior Casey Rote.

Canterbury posted a 45-34 win over Blackhawk back on Dec. 14 at Canterbury.

Leaders for Canterbury are 6-0 senior Chase Moyle, 6-2 senior Joey Pedro, 6-3 senior Trent VanHorn, 5-9 senior Cole Walker and 6-0 junior Grant Sinn.

Bethany and Lakeland Christian didn’t play this season. The Bruins and Cougars last played on Dec. 17, 2011 in the Bethany holiday tourney. The Bruins were 59-44 winners.

Six-two senior Caleb Morris and 6-0 sophomore Sol Brenneman are the Bruin leaders. Others are 5-9 senior Ike Lehman, 6-3 senior Jesse Loewen, 5-11 senior Isaac Schertz, 6-3 junior Abe Thorne, 5-9 sophomore Nate Nussbaum and 5-11 sophomore Cristian Romo.

Top players for Lakeland Christian are 6-1 senior Zarek Finley, 6-3 senior Billy Pitts, 6-0 senior Collin Price, 6-7 senior Calvin Prinsen and 5-11 junior Chris Silveus.
