PREP BOYS GOLF: Minutemen second at Maplecrest

GOSHEN — The boys golf season is already beginning to wind down, with conference tournaments including the NLC slated for a week from Saturday.

But a few conference dual meets remain before then, and one of those was held Tuesday night at Maplecrest Country Club as Goshen hosted NLC rivals Concord and Elkhart Memorial. It was the Crimson Chargers winning the meet with a 164. Concord was second with a 172 and Goshen third with a 183

Goshen dropped to 4-9 overall (0-2 NLC) with the losses.

The Redskins short game wasn’t working very well Tuesday night, according to coach Brent Randall.

“We didn’t do a very good job defending our home course,” Randall said.

Goshen’s putting was particularly disappointing, Randall said, with several players carding more than 20 putts.

For nine holes, a coach usually likes to see that number down around 15 or 16, Randall said.

Alex Hartsough had the nest round of the night for the Redskins with a 42. Quinn Albin had a 45, Michael Chupp carded a 50 and Joey Moyer and Jacob Pries both turned in 50s.

Concord coach Larry Bilger said his team is about a month behind where he’d like for it to be at this point of the season — but much of that can be blamed on early season weather woes that have limited both practice and playing time.

“We’ve got a lot to work on before the conference tournament,” Bilger said. “We’ve been battling some injuries, also.

Tim Johnson, despite being hobbled slightly by a bad foot, led the Minutemen with a 41. Peyton Kime added a 43, Noah Gonyon a 46 and Cole Wilkinson and Andrew Sandin turned in twin 47s.

Goshen travels to Plymouth on Thursday.

Summary

Concord (172) Tim Johnson 41, Peyton Kime 43, Noah Gonyon 46, Cole Wilkinson 47, Andrew Sandin 47.

Goshen (183) Alex Hartsough 42; Joel Moyer 50; Michael Chupp 46; Quinn Albin 45; Jacob Pries 50.

Memorial (164) Frank Iavaniglio 39; Braden Sherwood 45; Michael Foy 40; Nick Foy 40; Drew Stutz 45
