PREP SOFTBALL: Raiders roll

Nixon sharp for Northridge in run-rule shutout

GOSHEN — Some nights, it takes an inning or two for your hits to start falling.

That was the case Wednesday night at Goshen College as Northridge got off to a bit of a sluggish start before pulling away for a 16-0 win over Goshen in an NLC contest h alted after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

The Raiders (12-1 overall, 8-0 NLC) scored two in the first, three in the second, and one in the first before breaking the game open with six in the fourth.

Northridge coach Bo O’Dell said his team was making solid contact early, and just had to show patience.

“We were hitting the ball, but right at people,” O’Dell said.

Raider ace haley Nixon took a perfect game into the fourth inning, but lost it with two out in the frame on a solid single by Lacee Mulcahey.

With that, Nixon exited in favor of Brooke Maes, whi finished up with an inning and a third of shutout, two-hit ball.

“We’ve been trying to save some innings for Haley, but she had a chance to do something special,” O’Dell said.

Goshen coach Cassie McCormack, who saw her team fall to 4-14 overall (1-6 NLC), saw some positives.

“We had some errors, but we didn’t let them snowball,” McCormack said.

The Raiders pounded out 12 hits on the night.

Taylor Long, Nixon and Maes had two hits each.

Madison Schrock had a double.

Before leaving the game. Nixon had seven strikeouts. She surrendered just the one hit.

The Raiders travel to NorthWood on Friday.

Goshen travels to Warsaw.
