PREP GIRLS SOCCER: Goshen breezes to win over Bethany Christian

GOSHEN — Senior forward Diana Zermeno got her chance to play Tuesday night when the two players ahead of her were held out due to injuries.

She made the most of it by scoring a pair of goals for the Goshen Redskins in a 6-0 high school girls soccer win at Bethany Christian.

Senior Martha Castillo and freshman Aylissa Trosper were the Goshen players who missed the contest.

“I got to play quite a bit tonight,” Zermeno said. “It was great to be in there. I tried to play like the players ahead of me would have.”

Zermeno had scored one goal this season prior to the Bethany contest.

“Tonight gave us a chance to play some girls that normally don’t get a lot of time,” Goshen coach Dan Graber said. “Bethany is rebuilding.

“We were sluggish in the first half. I think the girls had their eyes on Saturday.”

Goshen (6-0) hosts Northridge Saturday around 5 p.m. Bethany (0-1) is at West Noble Tuesday.

“It was a challenging night for us,” Bethany coach Sam Richardson said. “This was our first game and we played well in parts of the field. What we need to work on is the whole field and continuing the defense to the forwards.

“We are an inexperienced team and this is a learning process.”

Richardson is a 1996 Bethany graduate who went on to play at Goshen College.

Zermeno scored Goshen’s first two goals. Junior Marisela Salazar assisted on the first and sophomore Jelitza Palomino on the second.

The Redskins were up 2-0 at halftime.

Sophomore Catherine Loera netted the first goal of the second half assisted by classmate Xenia Isaula. Sophomore Karen Rangel added the next goal which was unassisted. Junior Joleen Miller followed assisted by Palomino and Palomino added the final one assisted by freshman Ashton Ellis.

“We finished plays in the second half,” Graber said. “Bethany has always been a big game for us. When you are playing another school that is in the same town you want to win.”

It was a very warm and humid evening.

“It’s tough on us with only 13 players,” Richardson said.

Goshen led 30-0 in shots on goal and 10-0 in corner kicks. Sophomore Alyssa Hershberger was in goal for the Redskins

Two decades after NASCAR started running at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the crowds have thinned considerably. It's probably no reflection on the sport's massive following, which stretches from coast to coast, but it surely doesn't NASCAR's image help when the cameras pan across all of those empty seats.
