PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Redskins gut one out

Swihart becomes new career scoring leader in win over Marian

GOSHEN —  On a record-setting individual night for Goshen senior standout Aimee Swihart, the Redskins’ floor leader was more concerned with team goals.

Just before halftime Tuesday night against Mishawaka Marian, Swihart became the Redskins’ new all-time scoring leader, surpassing former leader Carol Hogenboom’s 883-point total with a signature hard drive to the basket in the closing seconds.

And in the closing seconds of the game, it was Swihart dishing in the paint to teammate Jessica DeStefano for a layup, foul and subsequent free throw that lifted Goshen to a 46-43 win over the Knights in a nonconference contest.

With the win, Goshen improved to 3-0 on the young season. Marian dropped to 1-2.

After the game, it was the team win that Swihart wanted to talk about. The Redskins blew a 12-point third-quarter lead and trailed 43-41 with just under a minute to play.

Swihart said staying calm and sticking to the game plan was the key.

“We have to stick together in times like that,” Swihart said.

“Our coaches tell us we have to be a fist on the floor.”

That attitude — and mental toughness — is quickly becoming a hallmark of the Redskins this young season. It’s something coach Lenny Krebs loves to see.

“I love this group,” Krebs said.

“Their mental toughness is great to see.”

But Krebs was less pleased with the way his team had to win.

“I’d much rather for us be in that position,” Krebs said.

The two teams battled to a 9-9 draw in the opening stanza, and Goshen inched out to a 28-21 lead at intermission.

The Redskins expanded that lead to 12 at 35-23 midway through the third quarter before Marian rallied, going on a 20-6 run to take the lead at 43-41 with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.

Marian was able to kill more than a minute with its four-corners offense, but a late stop, Swihart drive to the bucket, and another key stop set up the winning sequence.

Marian coach Patrick Catanzarite said missed opportunities hurt his team.

“We had our chances,” Catanzarite said.

“I can’t fault our girls’ effort.”

Swihart led the Redskins with 15 points. Christina Gipson added 10, Yadira Cabrales added eight and Deja Felder chipped in with seven for Goshen, which shot 45 percent from the floor on 18-of-40. The Redskins were 75 percent from the charity stripe (6-of-8.

The Redskins held Marian to 31.1 percent shooting from the field on the night (15-of-48), but the Knights went to the foul line 17 times — converting on just 10 (58.8 percent).

Katie Barnard led Marian with 20 points. Diedri Mastagh added eight.

Goshen returns to action Saturday night at home against Westview.
