THE GOSHEN NEWS
Windy conditions at Maplecrest Country Club Tuesday didn’t seem to affect Lakeland No. 1 boys golfer Spencer Mortola too much.
The Laker senior fired a 3-under par 33 on the front nine at Maplecrest to lead the Lakers to a second-place finish in a four-way nonconference meet with Elkhart Memorial, Goshen and West Noble. Mortola earned medalist honors.
Memorial won the meet with a 156. The Lakers shot 165, followed by Goshen with 171 and West Noble with 212.
Mortola said his putter was working well on Tuesday: He had just 12 putts.
“My driver was on today also,” Mortola said.
On a windy day like Tuesday, low-trajectory shots help keep your score down, Mortola said.
Lakeland coach Jon Roush said he’s expecting big things from Mortola, a state qualifier in 2012, this season.
Goshen coach Brent Randall was pleased with a 37 from his own No. 1, Alex Hartsough.
But the Lakers are struggling at the other positions.
“We need to find four good scorers to be competitive,” Randall said. “We need to be in the 160s for nine holes.”
Memorial also got a 38 from Frank Iavabnilio and twin 40s from Robert Sorg and Braden Sherwood.
Michael Chupp added a 43 for Goshen and Jordan Aldrich and Brad Pearson had 43s for Lakeland.
Goshen returns to action on Thursday with another home meet at Maplecrest againt Elkhart Central and Mishawaka Marian.
