GOSHEN — One year after beginning a new NLC winning streak the Northridge girls cross country team kept it going on Saturday at Ox Bow County Park by the slimmest of margins.

Warsaw took top honors last season ending a decade-long reign by Northridge.

Northridge and Warsaw were tied with 45 points based on each team’s top five runners and the Raiders had the edge in the sixth-runner tiebreaker by one place as Northridge senior Carly Spirito finished 23rd (21:44.67) to edge Warsaw sophomore Claire Kehler who was 24th (21:49.62).

“It was a lot closer than I wanted to see,” Northridge coach Ryan McClane. “We were a little flat. I was a bit disappointed as our frontrunners have ran with the top Warsaw girl all season and today just let her go.”

Wawasee (57 points) took third place followed by Plymouth (113), Concord (118), Goshen (145), Elkhart Memorial (150) and NorthWood (204).

A powerful Warsaw boys team with four runners among the top 10 finishers captured the boys team title with 32 points. Northridge was second at 46, followed by Goshen 78, Wawasee 94, Memorial 130, NorthWood 143, Plymouth 188 and Concord 209.

“Warsaw is a very deep team,” McClane said. “They are good and we ran better against them than we have at times during the season.”

Sierra Moore of Memorial was the girls individual winner covering the 5,000 meters in 19:09.42 on a very humid Saturday.

“My goal was just doing my best,” Moore said. “The humidity was really bad. Normally, I don’t like to run in these conditions, but today I felt good during the early part of the race and decided to go for the gold.”

Moore was the runner-up in last year’s race to Ashley Erba of Warsaw.

Northridge senior Olivia Golden was third overall finisher (20:03.28) on Saturday to lead the Raiders.

“The humidity was bad. Every breath you took in warmed you up rather than cooled you down,” Golden.

“It should have not been as close with Warsaw as it was. “

Golden was recently diagnosed with a stress fracture in the fibula  of her right leg.

“My goal was to finish in the top three and I did that,” she said.

Sophomore Katelyn Kilmer was 11th overall (20:49.44) and the third runner for the Raiders.

“Katelyn has really improved this season,” Golden said. “She started the year on the JV and now she is our third or fourth runner.”

Goshen junior Tricia Place was 15th (21:07.85) to lead the Redskins.

“There was no doubt our girls were off today,” Goshen coach Mike Wynn said. “We had a couple that ran well, but for the most part it was just not there for us today.”

Northridge senior Blake O’Dell was the runner-up to Warsaw senior Ellis Coon of Warsaw. Coon finished in 16:12.63 and O’Dell in 16:14.19.

“Times were a bit slow today,” O’Dell said. “Today was a change of pace for me. The idea was just to go out and have some fun. Our whole team tried to change our attitude. We have been training harder this year. I want to have fun and at the same time doing something since this is my senior season.”

Junior Gerardo Abad placed seventh (16:51.63) to lead the Redskins.

“My goal was to keep up with the front pack,” Abad said. “As long as the pack was in sight I was in good position. Every time I felt myself dropping back a little I just hit it harder.

“The humidity was more than it has been the past few years, but it was not too bad.”
