PREP GIRLS GOLF: Several from area to regionals

NorthWood qualifies as a team from Warsaw Sectional.

KENDALLVILLE —  No Elkhart County teams advanced out of Saturday’s East Noble Regional at Cobblestone Golf Course.

But the county will still be represented at next week’s East Noble Regional at Noble Hawk Golf Links.

Goshen’s Teage Minier (94); Concord’s Michaela Searer (96); and Fairfield’s Regina Raber (99) all advanced to regionals as individuals on a blustery fall day at Cobblestone.

East Noble (364); Carroll (375) and West Noble (410) advanced as the top three teams. The top three individuals not on an advancing team also move on.

Meanwhile, at the Warsaw Sectional at Stonehenge, NorthWood fired a 351, finishing second by two strokes to Rochester (349) to also advance to the East Noble Regional. The Panthers’ Heidi Morganthaler was medalist with a 76, defeating Rochester’s Kovenant Lingenfelter in a playoff.

The Panthers are headed to regionals for the fifth time in the past six seasons.

Wawasee was fourth with a 387.

Minier, a senior, will be headed to regionals for the second time in her career. And she’ll be doing it at Noble Hawk — one of her favorite courses.

On Saturday, Minier did it with consistency, shooting 49 on the front nine at Cobblestone and 45 on the back.

Minier struggled with the par-5s on Saturday, triple-bogeying both the third and seventh holes.

Good putting on the back nine helped Minier salvage a score that, while not what she wanted to shoot, was nevertheless good enough to advance.

Minier said she won’t feel especially nervous at the regional tournament.

“I’ve been there before,” Minier said. “And at the end of the day, it’s just golf.”

Goshen coach Brock Rose saw much to be encouraged about from his team, which finished tied for fifth with Fairfield (424). The Redskins took fifth on the fifth player tiebreaker.

Minier and Morgan Leonard were the only seniors in the Redskin lineup, Rose said.

“Conditions were tough out there today, and the scores were high,” Rose said.

Rose especially noted the play of No. 5 Leonard, who shot 61 on the front nine but recovered to card a 48 on the back.

“We talked about this probably being the last nine of her high school career,” Rose said. “I talked to her about making it a good one, and she did that.”

Elsewhere, Concord finished fourth with a 415 and Northridge was seventh with a 463.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
