PREP FOOTBALL: Top-ranked Concord routs Goshen

GOSHEN — Concord brought a No. 1 ranking (Class 5A) to Foreman Field on Friday night and the Minutemen lived up to that billing.

The Minutemen scored the first 42 points of the game and cruised to a 49-21 Northern Lakes Conference triumph over the Goshen Redskins.

It was a different outcome than 14 years ago when a No. 1 Concord team was clipped on the same field by a Goshen team which would go on to be a Class 4A state runnerup to Indianapolis Cathedral.

“Coach (Tim) Dawson addressed that before the game,” said Concord senior quarterback Trevor Wilmore who ran for 131 yards and passed for 149 in leading the Minutemen to their fifth straight win.

“We need to stay hungry, no matter what the rankings,” said the 6-1 (177) Wilmore who ran for three touchdowns and passed for two.

Senior Jackson Marlow, junior Jerrell Poindexter, senior Chris Martin and sophomore Jason Grooms each tallied one touchdown for Concord which hosts neighboring rival Jimtown next Friday at Jake Field.

Goshen, dropping to 0-5 and hosting Warsaw for homecoming next Friday, did outscore the Minutemen 21-7 in the last 14:42 of the game when Dawson had his reserves in the game.

Senior fullback John Trenshaw blasted two yards for a Goshen touchdown late in the third quarter.

In the fourth, junior quarterback Derek DeMeyer fired an 8-yard scoring strike to sophomore Brady Bechtel while sophomore backup quarterback Cameron Kline scampered 67 yards to score on an option play.

“They just shut us down completely in the first half,” said GHS coach Mike Cheviron. “We lost a couple fumbles when our kids were fighting for extra yards. Concord was just very good on defense and forced us to throw a lot.”

Indeed, DeMeyer put the ball in the air 33 times and completed 17 for 154 yards. Kline had eight receptions and Bechtel four. Trenshaw led the ground game with 65 yards.

Wilmore was 7-of-13 passing for the Minutemen with Poindexter catching three for 108.

“We didn’t want another history lesson like 1999,” said Dawson. “We got big plays from our offense, defense and special teams. They have been complementing each other all year. This was by far our best first half of the season.

“Our kids were flying to the football on defense. We wanted to take away the run and make Goshen one dimensional. This was a very physical game and we have some injuries to look at.”

Bechtel, along with having a stellar receiving game on offense, came through with two interceptions on defense.

Concord had five takeaways — fumble recoveries by seniors Nick DeFreese and Joey Deuel and sophomore Matt Moreno, interceptions by DeFreese and junior Brandon Thomas.

Marlow’s 11-yard run with just 2:44 elapsed got the Minutemen rolling and there was no stopping them. Concord tallied 14 points in the first quarter and 21 in the second to take command.

Three Goshen elementary schools — Chandler, Chamberlain and West Goshen — are providing free meals to all students during the school year as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Nearly 80 percent of students at Chandler, 89 percent of students at Chamberlain and 78 percent of students at West Goshen already qualify for free or reduced-price lunches based on their family income. How do you feel about the new lunch program?
