THE GOSHEN NEWS
In the end, Goshen’s All-Stars couldn’t overcome a tough beginning.
Yorktown scored three runs in the top of the first inning Tuesday and held on for a 6-1 win over Goshen in the Age 11 state baseball tournament at Concord Little League.
Goshen had its chances, loading the bases in both the third and fifth innings. But on both occasions, runners were doubled off bases after either a line drive or fly ball were caught.
“It’s hard for 11-year-olds to recognize situations like that,” said Goshen manager Perry Haimes.
“We had a tough first inning defensively and then didn’t seize on our two big opportunities offensively. You just can’t give away scoring chances like that by running into double plays.”
Goshen must now scramble to stay alive in the 14-team, double-elimination tournament which runs through Sunday.
Goshen is back in action at 12:30 p.m. today with an elimination game against Franklin Central of Indianapolis.
The District 14 champions are now faced with the task of having to win five games in five days for the championship.
Braxton Kincaid had two hits, Jocsan Sanchez, Mason Schrock and Michael Gamez one each for Goshen.
The only Goshen run came in the fifth inning when Schrock reached on an infield roller, Gamez singled and Kincaid singled for the RBI.
Left hander Joseph Good was sharp in relief for Goshen. He allowed one unearned run and four hits in five innings, striking out five and walking two.
Billy McNamara, Gabe Phipps and Zach Wickliffe each drove in two runs for Yorktown. McNamara had three hits and Peyton Johnston two.
Starting pitcher Phipps struck out four of the first six Goshen batters he faced. Michael Damer got the final five outs for a save.
Seymour, Brownsburg and Jasper join Yorktown as the four unbeaten teams remaining in the field.
