Junior Sarah DeShone tossed in 12 points for the Ferris State Bulldogs in a 72-60 women’s basketball win over Lake Superior State at Big Rapids, Michigan.
The Jimtown High School graduate also had three rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Bulldogs (NCAA Division II) are 13-9 overall, 12-7 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
DeShone is averaging 18.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. She is shooting 70.8 percent at the free-throw line (83-fo-104) and has 70 assists and 48 steals. Her scoring average in GLIAC contest is 18.5.
DeShone had been the team’s leading scorer in 14 games this season with a high of 27 in a 73-53 loss at Hillsdale College.
Junior Taylor Goshert (Wawasee) made 4-of-7 field goals and 2-of-2 free throws for a total of 10 points as the No. 1 ranked Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats were 79-54 winners at Goshen College. Goshert, who would have been a senior this season if not for a red shirt season due to an ACL injury, also had five rebounds, an assist and a steal. Indiana Wesleyan is 28-2 overall, 16-1 in the Crossroads League.
Sophomore Jaime Stack (Fairfield) had 12 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Goshen College Maple Leafs.
Bethel senior Ashlee Ort (Wawasee) tallied eight points, a rebound, two assists and two steals as the Pilots posted a 77-67 win over Marian. Bethel finishes the regular season with a 24-6 record.
Senior Chelsea Hite (West Noble) scored three points and grabbed three rebounds for Eastern Michigan in a 79-63 Mid-American loss to Buffalo.
Senior David House (Concord) posted a double-double for the Manchester Spartans in a 61-59 loss to Earlham. House netted 10 points (4-of-5 field goals and 2-of-2 free throws) and grabbed 10 rebounds. In the final home game of his career, House notched his fifth double-double of the season.
Saint Francis senior Ethan Hussey (Goshen) netted 16 points to go with two rebounds and three assists as the Cougars defeated Mt. Vernon Nazarene 77-67. It was the 97th career win for Hussey and the other Saint Francis seniors.
Grace senior Elliot Smith (Northridge) scored 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range as the Lancers posted a 69-63 Crossroads League win over Taylor on Senior Day. Smith sparked an 11-2 run with a pair of ‘3s’ as the Lancers erased an early 12-9 deficit.
Junior Josh Riikonen (Elkhart Central) had three points and three rebounds for Taylor.
Women’s Track and Field
Manchester sophomore Rachel Weeber (Concord) placed sixth in both high jump (5-1) and triple jump (31-6 3/4) at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference indoor championships at Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio. Senior Karla Madrigal (Elkhart Central) finished fourth in the 5,000 meters (19:06.48) and fifth in the 3,000 (10:46.27).
Also at the HCAC championship, Anderson sophomore Desiree Maran (Goshen) was seventh in the 5,000 (20:40.66).
Vanderbilt freshman Skyler Carpenter (Westview) placed 23rd in long jump (17-2) at the Samford Multi and Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama.
Men’s Track and Field
Manchester senior John McCall (NorthWood) placed 11th in the 60 meters (7.61) and the 200 (25.60) at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference indoor championships at Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio.
Franklin sophomore Brenna Ghigliotto (NorthWood) finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.66) and sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:03.53) in the Liberal Arts Swimming and Diving Championships. She teamed with freshmen Shelby Conrad, Cara Haynes and Hope Steel to place second in the medley relay (1:53.90).
