PREP BOYS BASKETBALL PREVIEW: Good matchups in offing this week


GOSHEN — The high school boys basketball regular season is winding down and conference champions are being crowned.

The Concord Minutemen captured the NLC championship with a 7-0 record. It was the program’s first league title since 2005.

The Westview Warriors still have one NECC game left to play but have wrapped up the crown with a 9-0 record so far. It’s the third title in the last four seasons for Westview. The Warriors were outright champs in 2011 and shared the top spot with Lakeland in 2010.

Further evidence of the regular season concluding is the sectional draw is Sunday at 5 p.m. The pairings show will be on WHME TV 46 at 7.

Sectionals begin on Tuesday, Feb. 12 with championships slated for Saturday, Feb. 17.

The local Class 4A site is North Side Gym in Elkhart. Joining host Elkhart Central are Concord, Elkhart Memorial, Goshen, Northridge and Warsaw. The 3A venue is Wawasee. Other teams besides the host Warriors are Fairfield, Lakeland, NorthWood, Tippecanoe Valley and West Noble. Westview is a 2A host. Other schools are Bremen, Central Noble, Fremont, LaVille and Prairie Heights. Bethany Christian and Elkhart Christian Academy are in a 1A field at Hamilton with Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, Fort Wayne Canterbury, Howe School, Lakeland Christian and Lakewood Park Christian.

Concord (16-1) hosts the Jimtown Jimmies (6-11) on Friday. One unique twist to the game is current Jimtown coach Ron Dietz guided the Minutemen for five seasons (1994-95 to 1998-99). This is Dietz’s first season at Jimtown.

The Minutemen are led in scoring by 6-6 senior Franko House 16.5 ppg, 6-5 sophomore Filip Serwatka 13.2, 6-2 junior Adam Glanders 8.7, 5-8 junior Ramon Johnson 8.4 and 6-3 senior DuWhan Alford 6.8. Top scorers for the Jimmies are 6-4 junior Cory Waycaster 9.5, 6-2 junior Chase Hoeflinger 9.3, 5-10 senior Mason Brown 8.4 and 6-4 senior Michael Hobbs 8.1.

The Northridge Raiders (8-10) are at Lakeland (6-11) on Friday. Six-six junior Nate Ritchie leads the Raiders in scoring at 19.3 ppg, followed by 6-1 junior Sam Ahonen 9.0, 5-9 sophomore Pete Smith 8.0 and 6-1 senior Joey Ganyard 6.3. Lakeland’s leaders are 6-1 senior Spencer Mortola 13.3, 6-3 junior Chandler Mynhier 7.2, 5-11 senior Mitch Herber 6.5 and 6-1 junior Brant Betts 5.2.

Also on Friday, the NorthWood Panthers (12-6) travel to Bremen (9-8). The Panthers have a solid 1-2 scoring punch in 6-5 junior Zach Zurcher 18.0 ppg and 6-5 junior Jonathan Wilkinson 15.7. Others are 6-2 senior Tommy Klem 8.4, 6-5 junior Will Stueve 6.6 and 5-9 junior Tanner Farmwald 6.3.

Stueve is coming off his best two games of the season. Last Friday, he tossed in a season-high 17 points in a 60-57 overtime loss to Elkhart Memorial and topped it with a 28-point outburst in a 66-53 victory over John Glenn. He made 10-of-10 field goals and 8-of-8 free throws.

Prior to the past two games his season-best was 11 points in a  77-45 win over Rochester.

The Bethany Christian Bruins (3-14) travel to LaVille (12-6) on Saturday. The Lancers are coached by former Plymouth and Bethel College standout Michael Edison.

Top scorers for the Bruins are 6-2 senior Caleb Morris 13.6, 6-0 sophomore Sol Brenneman 11.8, 6-3 junior Abe Thorne 9.0 and 5-11 senior Isaac Schertz 5.35.

The Fairfield Falcons (9-10, 5-3 NECC) host the Churubusco Eagles (2-17, 2-6) Friday. Leading scorers for the Falcons are 6-2 senior Garrett Scott 10.7 ppg, 6-5 senior Brad Lantz 10.0, 6-2 junior Marcus Rodes 9.8 and 6-2 sophomore Joe Line 8.1.

Also in NECC action Friday, the West Noble Chargers (14-3, 7-1) host Hamilton (5-12, 1-7). West Noble is dealing with the loss of its leading scorer 6-3 junior Drew Schermerhorn (14.3 ppg) who suffered a season-ending ankle injury. Other top point producers are 6-5 junior Keith Gibson 10.3, 5-7 senior Nick Thomas 9.1, 6-6 junior Phil Miller 8.6 and 6-7 senior Nick Noe 8.5.
